Well Mothers day we went down to CG to shoot with a family friend that needed to get out and have some fun. The morning went extremely well, stopped by Dell's and had some pizza then headed back home in Phoenix. Well just short of Queen Creek Rd the engine let loose and there we sat till I got the Cherokee towed home. The engine is shot and this is where I need some help.
I need to find a mechanic that can replace the engine in the 2000 Jeep Cherokee(4.0 liter 6 cyl) that isn't going to cost us an arm and a leg and is also trustworthy. Please recommend some one as close to the Laveen area(Southwest Phoenix) as possible. |

Are you sure it's the engine or could it be something else? What happened exactly? I'm a bit of a shade tree mechanic, if it were mine, I'd do it - but since you count on it for your family... In other words, I don't trust myself that much.

I am pretty sure the engine is toast. It was running hot and when I was pulling over smoke billowed out the back and there is oil all over the engine and under carriage. The dash warning light and dinging went off and I took my foot off the accelerator and she started knocking and rattling and then just quit before I could even get pulled over. I happened so quick.
I too am a shade tree mechanic. I'll do brakes, water pumps, fuel pumps alternators, ball joints, radiators and belts and hoses.. I even rebuilt the throttle body on an old S-10 blazer I had. But replacing an entire engine.. I just don't have all the tools and a place to do it. I don't have the replacement engine yet. I found a couple of sources for long blocks, so I know about what the engine is going to run. I don't have a mechanic up here in Phoenix that I know and trust. Thats why I was asking for some inputs. |

my friend harley is a damned good mechanic and does side work at his house. Be warned he is an interesting character but has done some work on my cars and always seems to be dead on when I ask him wtf is wrong with one of my cars. He is certified and all that as well. let me know if you want Ill get you in contact with him.Im pretty certain he has the means to do a motor swap at his house. |

If you do need a new motor i would suggest finding a mechanic to do the labor then buying the motor yourself. You can search the Arizona salvage yard database at www.aara.com.
This is what i did when i blew the 8.1 in my Suburban a few years ago. I found a mechanic to install it for $600 then had it delivered to his place. |

Want to get rid of it? :) As for repairs... are you mechanically inclined? the 4.0L I6 is a really easy engine to work on. without pictures it'll be hard to tell what went wrong but it is rare to have issues in the 4.0L engines. I know of several that went over 500k miles. if you overheated it you may have warped the head but any machine shop should be able to take care of that. Richard |

That engine started out way back in the 60's as a Rambler/Nash design,it is easy to fix a head gasket on it if you didn't seize it up .If it was knocking bad your better off getting a junkyard engine . If you can get a junk yard engine for $500.00 to $600.00 (that is a fair price) it's a snap to drop it in . You had to drive it a while overheating to do the damage you discribed . |
