I am looking for a suggestion on a place to move to. My wife and I are looking at moving to Arizona with our 3 children. We are looking for an area that is closed to outdoor activities (fishing, fly-fishing, upland bird hunting, deer hunting) but still "big town" enough for good shopping, work, and medical care. I like snow in the winter (asking too much?) and myself and my youngest have severe allergies to molds and minor allergies to grass and sage. I also do not tolerate high humidity well due to my asthma.
I am currently working toward my degree in IT and should be a certified PC repair soon. My wife is a phlebotomist, and is working on her Criminal Justice Degree but does not want to be a cop.
I am concerned with the economy, anywhere still prosperous?

Any help or suggestions?
Thanks

WOW.

Nothing like being a little picky.

I would think moving out of OR and into AZ would be a reward in itself, but that's just me.

Most large urban centers, Phoenix and Tucson are "closed" to all hunting within their city limits. AZ has an excellent hunting economy and many different things to do, but you can't do them in town. You usually have better luck in the desert or forest anyway.

Some areas of AZ have snow in the winter, but most are isolated, semi-rural areas like Williams or Snowflake OR they are awkward liberal backwater shitholes like Flagstaff.

Allergies ? You pay your money, you take your chances. One place will EXCHANGE an allergy for another. Sorry I can't help you there.

With your listed academic goals, I would suggest that there are more opportunities to be had in a larger town. Perhaps the Phoenix area or Tucson, once again.

I truly hope you leave the political world view that some Oregonians have in Oregon. Liberal politics have wrecked OR, CA and WA. and now that the ship is sinking the rats are fleeing to once conservative strongholds like AZ.

Not saying you are the problem, but you see my concern. AZ welcomes hard working, independent types. If you're seeking a newer, fresher welfare handout...keep going down I-40 or I-10 until you get past TX.

Thanks.

no good places to live and work where there will be snow but if you live in Pheonix metro area you have a short drive up to some snow , mountains, fly sfishing , hunting and all that.  about an hour and a half northeast to the rim area and youll be happy.

You better be raising all three of your kids with conservative values though. We don't need any parents breeding lefties into our state.

Well, for starters, thanks for making someone feel welcome to ask.
Now, how I raise my kids is up to me, but do you really think I would be a Lib. if I was on this site?

Well a California "conservative" could equate to an Arizona "moderate" at best and most likely "left of center" Oregon is somewhat similar. John Wayne would be welcome, maybe.

I tend to give everyone on this site the benefit of the doubt unless they out themselves (Dloken et al).  Just cause he's coming from Oregon doesn't make him a lib by default.

Sorral, if you move to Tucson or Phoenix, the economies are about the same.  Depending on the field, it varies from non-existant to actively hiring.  Plenty of healthcare jobs if your wife doesn't want to break with what
she's doing.  Each city has a state university, each is a drive away from snow in the winter or fishing or hunting.  No humidity to speak of.

Flagstaff will get you snow on the actual ground in the winter and put you near N. Arizona University, but it's a small-ish city and has lots of libs.  Phoenix is the biggest, the most red, has the most gun stores, and lots of illegals.  Tucson is a step down in size, a blue county, a lot of gun stores but they all suck, but doesn't get as hot and the snow is closer when it comes.

Oh, and IBCC.

I have a neighbor that loves guns but is a flaming bleeding heart lib and voted for obama. Asked him if guns were outlawed what he would do and he said he would have to tun them in. Called him a pussy after that.

If close is a 2 hour drive to PHX, maybe...  Keep in mind deer hunting is a draw and every other year for doe hunting is my best guess for odds.  If you want a buck tag, every 3 at least.

To actually be in a town, either Prescott or Flagstaff are the only ones of a decent size and to meet your requirement.

If you meant to say "close to" all of those activities, it sounds like Flagstaff would be perfect for you. Prescott is a close second and centrally located, too.

Did you mean close..not closed?
The prison system here is usually hiring. They have facilities all over the state.
It's only humid during monsoon season, most of the year it's dry as a bone.
The economy hasn't turned around yet... But on the bright side, housing is alot cheaper than it was a few years ago.
