Allrighty people... I am seriously contemplating taking a job at Ft. Huachuca. If I were to move there, my wife has found some houses near Sahuarita that she likes. I have a wife and 3 kids, possibly a 4th on the way if that really faint line my wife saw this morning gets any darker... Please understand, this will be our first major move, and it will be a big one if we do it. My intent is not to offend or upset anyone, so please read these questions as they are intended... a fact gathering inquisition from a more conservative perspective. My questions are these... 1) Is Tucson, S/E/SE side too far of a drive if I work on base? About how far is it? Is an hour commute realistic for 60 miles away from base? 2) What is the best part of town to live? (N/E/S/W) Where is the Bario I read about in the other thread? 3) How safe is it, and how are the schools... should I be budgeting in private school? 4) I read about illegals in another thread in the hometown forum. Not trying to be racist, I do not mean to offend... but as a white family, will we be the minority? If so, are we talking 40% or more like 10%? 5) In addition to the good, please drag out all the dirt... I wanna hear about all the reasons I should NOT be considering moving there. 6) In another thread... someone mentioned that Tucson was sinking... do you mean literally??? Or figuratively going down the tubes? Thanks in advance guys! |

... Arizona is not Tennessee. Tucson is a good 75 miles from Fort Huachuca. The gas alone will be $25 a day, never mind what you believe 3 hours of your day is worth wasted driving it If you insist on the move for the job, I'd consider living in Sierra Vista or surrounding area And, congratulations on number four! |

I live in Sahaurita. You will be about 45 miles from Huachuca. And the drive sucks in the winter. Sierra Vista is nicer in my opinion. As far as Tucson "sinking", I've heard the water table is causing some areas to sink 2-3 inches a year. I don't know if that is the local greenies trying to stir up water conservation or what.
Sahuarita kind of sucks if you want to work in Huachuca. I would look at Vail. As far as crime, it can be bad but it's not like Phoenix. The illegals really congregate there. The gangs in Tucson are nothing compared to the assholes running around up there (my opinion). Sahuarita is full of professionals, so it is quite tame. South Tucson sucks, and the good areas there are literally one block away from the shitty areas. Northwest is nice, but your commute will suck really bad. I like Sierra Vista, and if you want to work there and the wife wants to be close to Tucson, you should check Benson. Nice area with horse properties, and it is in Cochise County, so you get to avoid some of the Pima County liberal bullshit. PM if you have other questions. |

Oh yeah as far as ratios, I work in a 95% hispanic area, but my wife is hispanic so I have a hard time feeling like some kind of anomaly, and I speak Spanish also.
You'll fit in as a white family. The breakdown in most places is less than 50% hispanic, even though some areas (Santa Cruz County) are 95%. |

Thank you! And thank all of you for the responses! Now some of you said move to Sierra Vista, some said Vail... and someone said something about Liberal Bullsh!t... Those of you who dont like Vail... Why not? Is Vail in the mentioned county (Pima I think??) which is a bunch of liberals? |
| Far east side of tucson good..vail good , and in between Benson and vail..Or even Benson... there are many who make the commute to the base.. and those who live in Sierra Vista and work in tucson.... South Tucson and west side you kind of want to stay away from.. As far as the illegals, they leave you alone.. Its not like you seem them ALl the time.... I personally would live in Sierra Vista, nice area that has grown... has all the ammenties...Good luck |

I would look in Sierra Vista. I’ve had a house down here for ten years. The wife and kids have stayed here while I’ve PCS’ed back and forth. I can be off base and home in tem minutes vs. a 45-60 drive. I have worked with some guys that either ride share or take the shuttle. You take a chance of getting stuck here if you miss your pick up. I know a few people that live here and commute to Tucson. For me I can’t see the allure of the commuted to and from Tucson, why work 8 hours then spend two hours driving to and from work. Crime down here isn’t to bad, people drive like shit though. SV has enough thing to keep most people busy and your always going to run into folks you know when you have to go out. I know a few couples that bought house in Benson usually one spouse works in Tucson and the other in SV.
Do you mind saying where on post you might go to work? |
| Vail and Tucson is Pima county your best bet is to take a week and check out the areas, some people love living in the desert and others like being in town better. We do have alot of Libertards running around, we have the UofA which draws lots of them from California and since our public schools breed them we are stuck with them. We do have alot of like minded folks also hopefully we will start to take over. |

Campbell at the Division's "Screaming Eagle Network University" It is a commo school that teaches all aspects of the communications packages used by the Army. CECOM has recently taken over the contract, and is trying to put one on every major installation, using ours as a model. The deal to put one on Ft. Huachuca is almost complete, and they need instructors out there... which is why I am considering the move... |

Quoted: How old are your kids? They are 11, 8, 2, and one in the oven... Though at this juncture... it looks like im gonna stay put. I appreciate all the help though guys! Just FYI... I did not decide I didnt like Arizona... We have 6 instructors here... and as government contracts go... the one we are on changed. Our prime swapped over from a private company to CECOM... and they are going from 6 instructors to 3... so I was shopping around and checking out the options they were giving us to stay on board. Well, to make a long story short, I survived the cut and will be one of the 3 who get to stay. Who knows though, maybe in the future I will be putting this info to good use! Again, thanks for all the great info! |
