I have been looking at Az. as retirement options about 10-15 years out. Have a cousin in St.Johns area. What's the deal with the Indian Nations? I was looking on Apache Co. Sheriff's website which stated they have jurisdiction over "non-native" residents living on the nation's lands. WTF? I know the nations usually have thier own police but I'm used to jurisdictions involving geographical boundries not race. How does that work? Does the "native" get a pass from a county officer if criminal activity is committed just because the county officer only has jurisdiction over "non-natives" What if you're "part-native" just not of that tribe. That all looks FUBAR'ed. Like an older black officer I know once told me that before the Civil Rights Act passed in the '60's he couldn't write a ticket to or arrest a white person unless a white officer was present AND approved it! How does that work????

Simple.

Reservation police have jurisdication over anyone within reservation bounds (native/tribal and whites)

AZ certified post officers (who by statute can arrest anywhere in the state) are only allowed to arrest non-indians on the reservation.  Tribal police are the only ones allowed to arrest Indians actually on the reservation.

It's a little like 'home base' but generally what happens is if the local pd is chasing an indian and he heads for the res, tribal police are notified and they grab him up off the reservation.

PS - no guns/liquor on the res if you end up coming out.

There really isn't any border.  Hell, here in Phoenix (Scottsdale, I guess) there are national retailers on the Rez.

There isn't a border fence or anything.

Nothing to see on most of the reservations, unless you go to NE Arizona and see Canyon de Chelly and some other areas.  Most of the reservations look like junkyards with broken down cars and trash thrown around.

Here in the valley, just think of the landscape of the moon, and that is the Indian reservations(and most of the state) Nothing good to see, waste of time. Keep an eye out, you will see the wild packs of reservation dogs. The reservation is ike Mexico, Avoid if possible.
