I'm in the market for a 1911 as a gift for my dad. I'm not looking for something really expensive maybe around $500. I'm in the Tucson area but might be willing to travel to Phx. Any body know of any places that I might start looking? I know that if I go a little more pricey it would be better quality but unfortunatly my budget won't allow it. Suggestions?

You'll find better deals here on the internet then you would in gun stores (usually).

Go to the Sportsman's Center at DM and look for a basic Springfield 1911, a Charled Daly 1911, or a Taurus 1911.  The will order from Davidson't and you won't pay any tax.  Or go right off Base to Diamondback.  Or better yet to the Pawn Shop a couple of hunderd meters out the main gate on Craycroft.  Several places in Tucson, but try on base first.

I know it's a long drive for you, but I picked up a 1911 new from J&G up in Prescott for $349.
It's made in the Philippines and it's stock GI. I've put about 300 rds through it and had no problems.
For a few bucks more there are probably better guns deals out there but I'm happy with mine. Besides it's a good reason to get out of the heat and cool down up north.

I am guessing that 1973rrc is talking about an Arms Corporation 1911, and just out of luck i happen to see this yesterday and remebered it. its not 349 but i am guessing you might be about to make a deal with the guy that is selling it

Thanks I appreciate it. I'll check those out. Somebody else mentioned to me that because I'm military i'm authorized to by weapons from the depot that are still in packaging and are pretty much new. Does anyone else have any info on that?

Diamondback has some nice used and consignment 1911s for a decent price.  You might want to budget a few bucks more.  I didn't actually handle any today, but there were a few that got my attention.  They are in the back display case in the store.

The Diamondback cashier chicky has a very nice tushy, and a very sweet demeanor, too!!!  I saw them give a guy $335 cash for some model of Glock in a fairly new box.

That pawnshop/jewlerystore just off base sucks.  I have bought from almost every store in town, but that shop has stupid prices.  I go in there a lot, since they are close to the indoor shooting range, just for some deranged entertainment.  I have not seen one person buying a gun at that location in close to 10 years of passing through.

Murphys always has stacks of 1911s and I have bought a couple from them.  Great customer service too!

I've gotten some smokin' deals from CashBox.....but it helps to know the manager.
I find DiamondBack to be overpriced, Murphy's is fair.....
There's a fairly new shop, Pima Gun and Pawn, across from 2nd Amendment Store on Pima between Swan and Craycroft....good people running it and pretty good prices. And, they don't rape you on transfer fees for an internet purchase, either....
