My brother_in_law needs to have his a/c unit repaired or replaced.  He lives in a second story condo near the Paradise Valley Mall.  I did a search and came up with nothing.  Any suggestions of reputable companies would be appreciated.

I purchased a Trane replacement unit through a Home Depot store.  The unit was actually sold and installed by American Home Maintenance which apparently is a pretty good sized A/C company.  The unit and customer service provided by AHM have been as-advertised.  This probably isn't the lowest cost approach but I was in a hurry and felt like I could trust Trane and HD--put the whole thing on a credit card so there was a little recourse if things didn't work  out.  They normally have some kind of promotion going--I think there was a $1000 rebate when I bought mine. AHM typicallyt has a kiosk in each Home Depot store.

Air Conditioning Security is a good repair/maintenance company headquartered in Scottsdale.  Thy also install new units, but I don't think they handle any of the more well known A/C manufacturers.

Stay as far away from Wilson Mechanical as you can. I just filed a complaint against him with the AZ Registrar of Contractors.

The second company that came out and fixed his screw ups did a pretty good job.

Whoever you pick go to www.azroc.gov and check to see if they have complaints against them and what was done to rectify those complaints.

Check the ROC and the AZ Corporation commision.

The ROC will tell you how long the qualiifed person has been licensed, and the corporation commsion will tell you if the company has changed ownership lately.

And both will show any complaints.

I'll tell you right now, it's probably going to be about 1000 bucks more because it's hot.

Go with a strictly air conditioning and heating company.  If they also do plumbing, they generally charge more for AC.

Also avoid Chas Roberts.

They fucked up a simple fuse-replacement at least 4-5 times. Even their supervisor came out and he couldn't do it right. They kept trying to put in a replacement fuse that was lower watt than what was originally installed - along with trying to sell me a "kickstart" every time the replaced the fuse again. Once I knew what they were having so much trouble with, I bought the original-wattage fuse and put it myself and never had a problem since.

If you want it to last as long as possible,
get three quotes from outfits that install Trane equipment.

I would definately buy a Trane.

I put Tranes in our new house we built.  ONe 18 SEER and one 14 SEER.

I also had an 18SEER on our old house.

If he plans on living in the home for more than 5 years, go with the highest SEER rating you can afford.  You will thank your decision later.  Up front cost, higher, long term APS bills lower!

I have a big house with a wife that loves it cold.  So our units really help with the bills.

It also helps with resale...
