Wife's on week two of the worst flu she's ever had in her life. I'm on day two and hoping to nip it in the bud with supplements and vitamins every few hours. Sons on day two as well and it ain't looking good. This thing is NASTY. They say this year's flu is one of the worst ever, and the flu shot antibodies are only treating about 40% of the strains running around. Still better than not getting a shot. ERs and urgent are centers are full around the clock, at least in my neck of the woods. Hope you all manage to avoid the crud. |

I got the flu shot this year, I started to get sick this year I hit the vitamin C pretty hard to nip it in the bud. A buddy suggested Zicam to shorten the duration but I never tried it. Only lasted about 4 days and was pretty mild compared to the full blown flu I have seen people get this year. |

I'll be the voice of dissent. I'll let someone punch me in the gut before I ever let myself or one of my family get a flu shot. I got a flu shot 10 years ago, and ended up getting the worst flu of my life shortly after. I've haven't had a needle near me since, and I have only gotten the flu only 2 or 3 times since then, but it was only the 24 hour variety. |
Well hell, I want this damned 9mm lower wrapped up so I can put more pretty parts on it. I've been overdosing on $80 worth of vitamins from Walgreens, and I'm not quite dead yet, but if yer gonna be that snobby about it, I'll just drop the parts off in a box on your doorstep, right next to the flaming bag of shit |

A stiff dose of Ibuprofen will help with the fever and chills, bed rest and fluids as much as possible is about all you can do short of a trip to the hospital. I get a flu shot thru work every year and never had a bad reaction from it and not had the flu in many years. Take care and get better. |

Thanks. I usually get a flu shot through work too, but we've been on nights for a few months now so I haven't been around the 9-5'ers and missed out on all the cool stuff. I pretty well off, the supplements and vitamines seem to be keeping the crud at bay, but I may end up taking the old lady to urgent care today depending on how she feels. Kid too. This stuff ain't no joke. Guess we can expect each year's strains to get more and more virulent (sp?) eh? |
This year is a bad one but no reason to expect it will get worse next year (unless bird flu turns into a pandemic then we are all in for a real SHTF experience) If you do go to the Doc ask for a script for Tamiflu with a refill. May not help this late into the infection but next time take it in the first 24 hours of symptoms and it can make it a lot less severe. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/15/AR2008021502498.html "This season, we are seeing more disease out there and higher rates of hospitalizations and deaths than we've seen in the last couple of years," "Complicating matters, some of this year's influenza type A virus is showing resistance to the antiviral drug Tamiflu. Overall, 8.1 percent of the influenza type A viruses tested by the CDC are resistant to Tamiflu. In past years, less than 1 percent of the viruses have been resistant to the drug" |

I've used to not think much about the flu shot until recently now I'm all for it. Last month I got it bad for 3 weeks. It took me another 2 weeks to get my strength back. It was the worst I ever had. My 6 and 4 year old kids got it also but not as bad as I did. My wife and 1 year old baby got the flu shot and they didn't get it. The good news is that I lost 10 pounds and managing to keep it off. |

I recall reading in the Repugnant that this year's flu vaccine and the current strain making the rounds didn't coincide. When they make the vaccine, they take an educated guess on what the next flu strain will be, and create the vaccine for that. Apparently what's going around isn't what's being countered in this year's vaccine. Obviously this is a simplified version of how they do it.... |
That's like saying I've got a gun for sale and it's $500 or I'm running for president but you have to ask me about my beliefs. You gotta put details why and the reasoning behind it. Any particular reason why you don't get flu shots?? (Lots of sarcasm in this post BTW, just in one of those moods.) |
Ever read anything about natural vs passive immunity? Ever wonder why there is antibiotic resistant strains... Is there a better way? A good diet, exercise, clean water, positive mental outlook, goes a long way. I don't trust the FDA either, I'd rather take my chances my way, and I can't remember the last time I got really sick. |
Let's not forget all the other fun stuff in the shot like Mercury that you pump yourself with every year. No thanks. For all of you skeered of needles (like me), you can get the nasal spray job. There is no replacement for a healthy body and good immune system. Just think of all the stuff living on you at this very moment. Your own P-Funk should take care of it. I would be more afraid of MRSA. Probably one of the few scary threats out there. Unless you have had Open heart surgery and your paracardiam has been compromised, immune disorders, etc. you will be better off in the end without it. Just stay at home or away from kids and old folks. JarHeadChiro is on the money with this. |
Isn't the flu a virus and antibiotics wouldn't work on it? I used to think that way also until last month when I saw how well it worked for my wife and 1 year old daughter. |
Yes, the flu is a virus and antibiotics won't do shit. What he's talking about, however, is the creation of resistant strains of bacteria and viruses due to the prevalent use of antibiotics and vaccines. Inevitably, there will be some bacteria and viruses that do not get killed or can work their way around the vaccine. Just as one can build a tolerance to drugs and alcohol, so do these bugs. Thus was MRSA "born". A flu shot will not do anything to lessen the flu if you already have it. It's a "vaccine" to prevent the flu....the flu that the creators of the vaccine will hit this year. Sometimes they're correct, sometimes not. In the case of your wife and kid, there could be any number of factors why they didn't suffer severe flu symptoms, including the vaccine. Other reasons could be they didn't catch a severe form of it, their own immune systems were able to handle what they caught, etc. Short of some clinical research, any direct attribution to the flu shot alone is purely anecdotal. I haven't had a flu shot in...well, I can't remember the last one I had. I've had the flu once or twice, but so far it's been the 1-2 day symptom variety. I try to eat as well as I can, take a vitamin supplement, though I don't exercise like I should. TimW Phoenix |
