Tomorrow I go to Phoenix to hopefully enlist in the Army. I just spoke with my recruiter, and he and the NCOIC of my local recruiting station just informed me that I may not be eligible for the 18x program, which is what I have been busting my ass for the past two years to get. I was told that it might not be available to me because a recruit needs to be 20 years old to apply (I'm presently 19 and my birthday is in July), and because they just might not be able to get it for me (something he neglected to mention over the past two years ). I was told that if it's not available to me, my best bet would be to go Infantry/Airborne/Ranger, and then try to get a slot at selection. For those that are current/prior service, what advice can you give me here? Any curve balls I need to be aware of at MEPS?Thanks in advance. P.S.- I leave for Phoenix at 3:45 A.M., so this is time sensitive. |

MEPS isnt that bad, the waiting around is the hard part. That and the 6 fingered crazy man yelling about how you cant pee. MAKE SURE YOU READ EVERYTHING! They throw ALL the curve-balls in at the very end around 4PM when you pick your contract. Make sure you know what you want and make sure they give it to you. They will be willing to set you up on 18x if you are 20 when you ship out, I assure you. I can say that because if they dont, tell them to fuck off. That is too long of a contract for them to say you cant do what you want to. |
| Um, if its not in writing you don't get it. I will say though that if you do choose to go the non 18x route you still have a decent chance of getting a SF selection spot, the SF guys are recruiting around here like mad, they've talked to our unit twice in the last 3 months. If you go tommorow and decide to accept less then the 18x option at least get a 'Ranger' contract. |

Yes listen to these guys. I am Chair Force but in pretty much any military position they will screw you if it is not in writing. If its not what you want trust me walk off. The recruiter will want to get you so if you walk off they will come up with something. I am dead serious about this. NO MATTER HOW TOUGH THEY PRESS YOU STAND YOUR GROUND! You know how scary it is to have some asian guy yelling numbers and question at you with a thick accent and shoving you around because you are trying to figure out what the fuck he is saying while just hpoing that his bad english isnt just a trick to play on the Americans after fucking with them in the last massive war? Dude, I used to have to STRONG ARM my recruiter into taking me to MEPS. I Wanted in NOW!! It was Apr 2003. I just told her you pick me up at 5 am cause the AF recruiter is coming at 5:15. Get it in writing. They had my MOS listed WRONG on the contract they tried to get me to sign. The first time I almost joined I walked due to contract issues, 7 years prior. |

I know who you're talking about. He did the physical agility portion (stand on one leg, stretch your arms behind you, etc) of my testing. The black lady with the bad attitude drew my blood. Just what I want near me, a woman that is pissed at the world and armed with a needle. |
