A couple of guys I shoot with and I are interested in prairie dog hunting.  I live in the bullhead city area and we don't have'em here.

Are there any places in AZ. to go?
If so any body got any names or #'s for ranches?
What times of year can you hunt?

Any info would be appreciated.

I did try the AZ. game and fish website and it didn't seem to have any info.
  Thanks, mostow241

The only place I've hunted p-dogs is Boquillas Ranch Just north of Seligman (about 60-70 miles west of Flag).  Had enough dogs to keep four of us going for most of the day.  The ranch is owned by one of the Indian tribes but is open to the public.  They have a deal with G&F.  The season doesn't open until mid-June.  You can't use FMJ ammo and your limited to 5-round mags.  Hope this helps.

The little bastards are out in my pecan orchard.  The enviro weenies are trying to get special protection for the nasty buggers down here.

I see that little rodent pop its head up, it'll be endangered all right...

Now that's just not true.  The Desert Museum has quite a collection of them!

I'll be going dog hunting on a private ranch soon, turns out my neighbor has a friend with a big dog problem.  So big he may be willing to actually pay for me and a couple friends to go out and do some hunting.  I don't have a rifle capable of doing this as of yet, but when I finish my 20" FF upper with glass...

*I* have a rifle capable of doing this, and it's even an AR-15. I'll be your friend, too.

If you have a rifle you do.  It aint rocket science.  Ive killed them squeeky little ba$tards with everything from .17hmr to 7mm mag.  They all go splat one way or another.

I *might* be able to take one or two other people with, but it isn't my ranch so I can't invite everyone(or else I would).  As for having a rifle to do it with, my M4gery probably isn't accurate enough to hit them at that range, and I don't think I'm going to find out.  It's for putting holes in paper up close, and my 20" is going to be fore those pieces of paper waaaay far out.

What distance are you talking about?  Your M4 should be accurate enough, it just might not have the super-explosive effects worthy of slow-mo video because of velocity.

It's only by choice that folks use long ranger varmit rifles to hunt prarie rats.   We hunted them as kids with a bolt action single shot 22. :P  You can sit cross legged at 25 yards away and they will keep popping up.

Although.... it's not nearly as satisfying as nailing one with a 30-06, but it does make counting up your tally a bit hard. :P

Where are you located that you've got enviroMENTAL problems?

Now if only this state allowed suppressors for hunting...  That's the one AZ reg that always annoys me- no cans while hunting.

The capacity limit is a bit silly (back in WI, go ahead and load up your beta drum and have at it..!), but I can deal.

But the no cans rule...

Southwestern Cochise County.  The enviros are trying to get the black-tail prarie dog protected, and a program of 'reintroduction' started.  Its all part of their plans to get Fort Huachuca closed.
