I called AJ's Fine foods to see about getting the roast beast for my crimmus dinner and the man said he wanted over $18 a pound for prime rib. WTFO?! Anyone know where I can still get a decent roast for a little better price? I'm leaning toward McCagnos on the west side, but the last time I bought one from them I wasn't too pleased. Any suggestions?

$18 per pound!

BTW, Roast Beef and Prime Rib aren't the same thing.  I would check out Costco or Sams Club.  You can sometimes get whole sub primals intact there.  I know I've seen whole strip loins in the cryovac bag just as they come from the packing house.

I'm sure they might have a whole LIP ON RIBEYE.  And it doesn't have to be PRIME GRADE.  Just get a whole choice rib eye.  The PRIME in PRIME RIB does not designate the grade of the meat.  It simply designates the cooking and presentation method.

You can also just get Standing Rib Roasts at FRY's.  That's a Bone in rib eye.  Unless you have your heart set on Prime Graded meat don't get hung up on the expensive purveyors of meat.  They're selling pretty much the same meat as everyone else.

Holee shite!

No.

Listen to markm. There is also a decent butcher on the eastside too that will get you a nice piece of meat.  His name is Roger.  Store is Midwestern Meats. Tell him Roger sent you.

... I'll have you know, the $18/lb @ AJ's is well worth the money - absolute best beef in town, even beats my usual "Midwestern Beef" on Main & Greenfield.

I'm ready to go with your recomendation but, the ball and chain says "no way am I paying that much". Seems like I MAY have to veto her decision.  Thanx marcum for your input as well. I am a member of sams and costco, I'll check 'em out.

I would disagree. I think Roger's finest cornfed midwestern beef is better than AJ's.

AJ's does have some damn fine meats, but I dont think they are worth the extra 50% on the price.  I'll just go to Dickmans, the local butcher shop.

AJ's is set torward, the people that listen to 95.5 KYOT.  The trip a day, giveaway radio station.

I know this, by my customers music.

Although, I do go there once in a while, to get my beef tenderloin. It's the best.

Their wine is way over priced. After living in the Napa Valley years ago. I turned into a wineaholic.

Wine with lunch and dinner everyday. And lot's of Olive oil.

Thats painful, runs $8 a pound in my area which is still too much for me.  I go see a friend who runs a slaughterhouse/butchering pin.

Go with a TOFU substitute.

You can go to good ole Basha's butcher shop and ask for standing rib roast. They have Choice cut (it's virtually impossible to get Prime as restaurants get first dibs on Prime cut rib roast.) I've never tried Fry's but have been buying from Basha's butcher shop in the past six years and the prime ribs come out as good as the restaurants.

I'm sure AJ's probably has prime, but it's not worth the extra money for rib cuts in my Opinion.  Choice is plenty marbled and juicy, especially in the rib eye.

Consider the location of AJ's...
its the snobbery  of the place...

Excellent choice.

I need to check the propane to make sure we have enough to grill some tofu for the Kwanza festivities.

I decided to go with Sam's. Picked up a 10.5# loin for about $40. Now, anyone have a killer seasoning/cooking recipe?

I live in Virginia and it is far away from the packing plants, the average cost of bone in Prime Rib at sams club, "choice". 4.39 per pound todays price since we have one every Christmas day.

18.00 per pound is way out of orbit.

Ok. I now have spent another $80 on a standing rib roast from McCagnos. I'll use the other one as a freezer offering in the future. I was telling the fine lady there about the price at AJ's and she and informed me that McCagnos and AJ's are stocked by the same supplier. Go figure. Merry Christmas to all.
