Specifically, Prescott and surrounding areas of Yavapai county: how is it there overall in terms of cost of living (for AZ) and friendliness towards the shooting sports? Overrun yet by yuppy city folks like Sedona?

I've got a possible job prospect in Prescott  and would love to leave CA for good and move back(i.e."repatriate" myself and family) to AZ. Grew up in Tucson but I favor the cooler climes rather than the hotter of [Tucson] and PHX.
What 's really for sure is the thought of staying in CA getting to me. You know the rest of the story.

I'm starting to relish the idea of a couple acres plus to put a 3/2 house on which would be close to wide open spaces for hunting and riding and be amongst those who are likeminded. Towns like Paulden, Chino Valley, Dewey, Mayer still "look" quite affordable for around $150K. Sounds crazy?

Would like to hear from long time residents from this area.  Many Thanks!

While I don't live in Yavapai county, I do spend some time there. It's been my impression that it is generally gun friendly. You do have the usual assortment of granola types, but nothing too obnoxious.

If I could maintain my Phoenix income and live in Prescott, I would do it in a minute.

I'm looking to retire up there. I work for the local phone Co. in Az. and would take a transfer up there if I wasn't on pager 7 days a week. Hope you make lots of money. I figure it will take $75K a year MINIMUM to live up there.

Those little towns are neet but you are kind of "out there" and your family may not like that.

... My plan as well, except closer to Flagstaff (Kachina Village, Munds Park area).

... I actually considered a job offer made to me here in California today. At first, the money sounded phenominal - but then I realized where I am. No way Jose', I lov Arizona almost as much as I despise Kali

$75K year minimum? I hope you're referring to living in Prescott paying a country club mortgage on Precott's high real estate prices!
Outside this town seems reasonable, but I could be wrong?

...and I'm sure you'll be glad you resisted the temptation.
I've come to the point that [for guys like us] California is not worth any amount of paycheck money. I really need to get my kids to a sane environment.

Chino Valley will have the best infra-structure of the towns you mentioned, but the 6 mile 2 lane stretch from Chino to 89A intechange is a nightmare during daylight hours, worse during business day rush hours.

Paulden will likely mean dirt / mud roads, a water well, and septic system, and the drive through the 6 mile stretch mentioned above.
Better build a fortress in Paulden to keep out the Pauldenistas.

Both above would mean Chino Valley schools: Not too bad.

Dewey / Humboldt will mean septic and well water, but you have a better chance of getting a paved road.

Above would mean Humboldt unified schools: Again,, not too bad.

Mayer is a bit of a comute to Prescott, (depending on exactly where your work is in Prescott), but people do it all the time.

To give you an idea of housing costs in Prescott Valley (at least in my area), I bought a 1800 sf 3/2 2 years ago for about 155K:
It would sell today for 234K.

Where in Prescott is this job you've been offered ?

I work in Prescott and live in Glendale, the cost of living in Prescott is outragious. there is no way I could have the standard of living in Prescott that I have in Glendale, even though I make real good money. typically jobs in Prescott don't pay well, all the CA transplants have shot the cost of living up here.

AZCOP, thanks for your input . As an LEO (?) around there I'd like to hear more. The thing about "Paudenistas" intrigues me.  Can you elaborate?

AS for traffic, I was out there a few weeks ago during business rush hrs. and I didn't see anything scary - then again, look where I'm coming from(LA Co.) so it's hard to scare me!

I'm not your typical Californio strutting in loaded and ready to pay big prices, that is why I'm looking to the ouskirts even if I have to rough it awhile with unpaved roads, septic etc.
My main thing is to get a big parcel (2 acre) of my own to live in peace on and not have to worry about neighbors 10 feet away.
But "pauldenistas" to look out for?

Hey! We all want to hear about the Pauldenistas!

I read an article in the Arizona Repugnant the other week about how Kaliban infiltrators are driving up the housing prices in Prescott, Payson, and Show Low to the point where the locals are getting priced out of town. "Poverty with a view", I believe they called it.

Soon Scottsdale will be the cheapest place in AZ to live.
