My apologies if this has been hammered out many times, but I do not see it tacked or in current posts. Other than ranges, where are good targeting areas around Phoenix? Are there good open areas off of the reservations?

I am looking to shoot some of the stuff not allowed on ranges like magnums and M855. I am in the Chandler area, looking for SouthEast/West of Phoenix. Thanks, Dan

I'd like to know as well.I'm not used to these strict bench shooting ranges around here.
Link Posted: 10/19/2003 12:48:54 AM EDT

May I suggest you buy a book called Arizona Gun Laws by Alan Korwin. It has a section on what lands are legal for shooting on and which are off limits.

To help you out a little. Land that you can shoot on. As long as they are not posted No Shooting. Example: Lower Tonto NF is off limits by the Salt River Recreation Area also by Lake Bartlet.

1. BLM also known as Bureau of Land Management land.

2. National Forest Land.

3. Private land if you get the owners permission.

May I also advise you get a map that shows the different types of land by colors. Or you can get maps from BLM or NF.

I hope this helps. The Arizona Gun Laws book will also give you the shooting laws. Such as 1/4 mile rule and other laws.

Thank You. I was not looking for anyone's private fishing hole so your directions are perfect.
I also am in on a bunch of us buying a chunk somewhere. But, it seems like that is how all ranges get started and then someone wants to move next door and get laws to shut them down.

Thanks for your info.

Thank you Carbine10. I actually have that book. I keep finding myself in BLM, AZLM or Reservation areas. I am hoping for some direction to some tried and proven areas. I have already had the experience of finding out that I am on "Res" land and having stuff confiscated. There must be a wide open area around here where we can blast away.

Thanks too carbine.I have Alan's book too but sometimes the shoot/no shoot land restrictions can get confusing.I wasn't looking for anyones special spot either.I'd actually prefer a place that I can practice drills alone.
Thanks Topcrest, I'll have to check some of those places out.Maybe we can contact a travel agent and see about a group package to Afghanistan

Ok what about state land? It looks like if Afghanistan is on state land. At least i think i know where it is. Even if i dont im all for a shoot where tannerite is legal. Plan on going to the CG shhot on 11/1/03. Bringing some factory ammo. Cant wait to try a full auto.

I usually drive south of the valley almost to Maricopa and then west on 238. I do almost all of my shooting on BLM land. The drive is about 45min from Gilbert with my lead foot.

Thanks mleaky, this looks like the open kind of area I was hoping for, and, according to my map, there is also a casino nearby to make the trip home more interesting.

I've heard of an area in queen creek my friend told me aout. He said he called up the pinal county sheriff's office and they sent him their. Its an old airport that has had its runway overgrown. I tried to find it once but got lost. I should ask him whee it is again.

Be careful, I thought bringing guns on a reservation was a no-no or is that only if you're wearing them.

As I understand it, there are agreements to allow legal weapons "in the vehicle" while passing through the Reservation, which you have to do to get to where he suggests. The actual shooting area described by mleaky is BLM which should be okay. The "assumption" is that if I pull off of the highway, into one of their casino's, then my car will not be searched. I think "out of sight, out of mind" is the rule on the Res.

This may be the airport on the east end of willy. Its accessed from Ocotillo and Rittenhouse IIRC, just over the Pinal border.

If thats not it, I know the airport he's speaking of because I had to find it to get my pilots license. The check rider kept asking me if I saw it. I couldnt find it it to save my life. It turned out I flew straight to it and couldnt see it until he very explicitly pointed it out to me. Ill consult my charts and see what I can come up with.

Now thats funny. Just today i was working like a few hundred yards to the south of the "Rittenhouse Aux Airfield". I didnt even know it, till i just looked at my yellow map bok. No wonder there were some people out there flying R/C planes out there. The only road that i saw to get to the area heads north of of ocotillo. The only thing is all the gates to the area are now posted as "State Trust Land" and are also posted "No Motor Vehicels" So what is a guy to do? I guess im to law abiding.

Based on the comments of all of you I have found "Rittenhouse Aux Field USAF" on a GPS map, going north from the intersection of Ocotillo and Siera Vista (N33 14.979 W111 30.700). Looks like you stay East on Ocotillo (7.09 miles from Ellsworth.) until it intersects SV, then go straight North. Ocotillo actually doglegs left at almost the same point. (I have pic of the map, need help to place here).

I can still see the tracers.

Some advice to some of you. You can drive thru State Trust Land to get to BLM Land.

Just thought you might want to know.

Yep, when you go straight North off of Ocotillo, that becomes state land. With the "No Motor Vehicles " sign. There were also CAP guys hovering around the area also.

Hey Dan, Look on those maps and see if you can find another airstrip. I bet there is another on out there somewhere from What Topcrest said. if you would, post directions and ill look for it. I dont have a GPS yet, but am working on it. I am in the area a least 3 times a week.
Thanks

Actually I do see what may be another way into this one and possibly one could think it is a different airport, It is aligned as if Airport Road (Which is halfway between Ocotillo and Pima) actually continued East, instead of ending at Schnept Rd. You can see where the roads have been "cut off". You can get to it either from Ranch Rd. or Ocotillo/Rittenhouse.

The RC airplane guys are gonna hate us. Probably no berms or hills to shoot into anyhow, looks awful flat.

www.attainability.com/airport_map.gif

The only other one I could see anywhere around is Williams Field. Willinams suspiciously could have an abandoned area at the far East.

If I am in Queen Creek today ill look around. I am borrowing a buddys GPS and ill look for that way point you posted.
Thanks

Ok i went down there today. only two ways in to the area. North of Ocotillo and SierraVista(N33 14.979 W111 30.700). The other is Pima And Schneph (N33 15.817 W111 31.727) It is actuly a trail like road that heads east in to the area. There is no access from the raod called Ranch, as there is a house on the east side of Schnepf.
Talked to some guys that were flying ultra-lights out there. They said even tho it is posted aginst all Motor Vehicles, it is really to deture quad's and dirt bikes. So you need to get a permit from the State 602-364-2753. The sign says it is closed for soil stabliation and restoration. I did not go into the area since i dont have the permit yet and I drive a big red company truck w/ the company name all over it.

Thanks for the map FutureDan, it was a great help. I would like to know where you found the software that it wasa created with.

Thanks for scoping it out Mike. It does appear a bit of a trek and a pain for shooting etc.

The software (MapSource/Metroguide/US Roads) is "optional" software that downloads into Garmin GPS units. You can mark a spot and the GPS will guide you to it(within 80 ft.). It also shows all known busineses and recreational areas as of most recent version. Pricey though. And how much your GPS can carry depends on your memory. GPS does come with basic maps of major roads/landmarks for entire US. www.garmin.com/ Dan

Go east/south on IH10 to exit 226/red rock, Go west through ghost town of Sasco, keep going till you get to the open pit mines on left pick a pit or a spot. If you continue on this road it will circle the Ragged Peak mountians and come out on Pinal air park road.
Road is Gravel after the feed pens and you are good to go with a 2 WD pickup good dove hunting too some quail.

Kind of a day trip but not a soul for miles to spoil your fun. Unless Clinton made it into a National Monument without telling us.

That area out there near the aux airfield and in between the CAP berms has been used by some of us East Valley Rednecks for years as a Jackrabbit Killing Field.

We've slaughtered hundreds of them out there since the late 80s.

Mostly at night with spotlights.

No, we dont kill anything else.

Is that the place just south of the White tank mountains? I guess that would be the southern tip of that mountain.

Arizonastan is to the east.

The dikes off of I-10 and the white tanks is a good place to shoot. Last time I was out there for a "big" shoot someguy arrived in his NOTAR and unloaded an M-60 on a tripod to shoot.
