So what do we replace it with? I gotta think we still want some police, fire. Ems services?  Maybe a few schools and libraries, roads plowed, dutches dug. Stuff like that costs money.

County-based consumption tax or a flat property tax for all, regardless of home value, rolled into the mortgage. After the mortgage is paid, no more tax. Equality for all.

We pay a lot more taxes than just property taxes. Or at least I do...

IMO police are in need of a heavy re-org. But that's very unlikely. Just doesn't make sense to have 3 or more agencies covering every city. Heck, city PDs just don't make sense to me anyway. Sheriffs depts should be able to handle all the policing we need.

I'm confident that if it's worth funding, people will find a way to fund it that doesn't involve lifelong rent payments to the government.

"Special School District Assessment"

The fuck is that?

Hopefully it allows each school district to arbitrarily increase taxes when they need to.

Or only allows the school board to approve necessary increases

Or …..

At least I know how the dick goes into my butthole currently. Until they tell me how I have to take it in this new world of no property taxes, I’ll stick to what I know.

$5,166 for schools. This is 71% of the total tax bill. Schools are the problem causing a high tax bill.

Grabbing a pizza after helping at the PCSI youth day and there is a group who set up a tent to collect signatures for this tax amendment across the street. They stopped in and asked for signatures, didn’t have an answer when I asked how governments were expected to replace the lost income. One volunteer mentioned maybe it would be a good thing for local governments to go bankrupt thanks to this.

Seems short sighted.

What if they (different parts of government) replace all the lost revenue with patchwork. Some income increases (now you have less income), some sales taxes (and you know with pork, etc, it will be huge ), now you will have less cash with more cost to get through life.

It could end up with you net having less money to operate your life and having higher costs, you could really end up with the unknown fucking you hard

And you asked the million dollar question that they cannot answer.  Just goes to show you the ignorance of a lot of voters including some of those on this thread.

All the more reason why there should be a higher threshold when it comes to the ballot initiative process. That being said, any state constitutional amendment should require a 60 percent supermajority and signatures need to be gathered from all 88 counties not just 44. Wait until Moms Demand Action or Everytown (whatever they call themselves these days) starts collecting signatures for their agenda to go on the ballot. Its coming and Im calling it! It's a shame that too many of those on here did not put as much effort behind the supermajority intiative 2 years ago, like they are with this. When they become instant felons over night for not registering their semi autos, Id like to see their argument then..... "but but but, muh proPerttiee tuxEs"

As much as I agree that our method of imposing property taxes needs an overhaul. This needs to be done by the State Legislature, not by the voters. If someone does not like the way the state legislature is dealing with it then do not vote for them.

I support the elimination of our current property tax scheme. When property tax levies are approved by the electorate there is an understanding of the cost to property owners. To tie rediculous increases in property values as opposed to inflation rate or cost of living is unconstitutional in my opinion. I didn’t sell my home or make any improvements, and the State determined my tax liability will increase 43% in one year.

Too many fingers in the pie with schools, cities, counties, fire departments, police departments, libraries, parks, transportation districts, all of which have tremendous pull on the legislature to prevent needed reform. Note, none of the people I just mentioned are elected at the state level. I have spoken to my School Board, State Representative and State Senator. They either don’t care (school) or cannot change (Rep, Senator) the tax scheme we have.

Eliminate property taxes or tie increases in property values to rate of inflation or cost of living. Require approval by the electorate for any increase in property tax values. I believe an amendment to our State Constitution is the only way to stop this madness.

That's crazy

Knew a guy in Seattle that inherited his grandmother's house, a place he often stayed and played at when he was a kid.

Forced to sell it a few years into owning it as the country setting it was in ended up being high dollar area with huge property taxes. He couldn't afford to keep it. That should never happen.

The tax rate should be set when you buy it, that should be your taxes, forever. When it sells you can put a new value tax on it.

Yea. I'm for funding the schools, but its unfair when voting for a levy you know exactly what it will cost you, then the state just changes your property value and the levy is now collecting way more money than I agreed to. Without any improvements, mine went from $4900/year to $6400 this last adjustment, not to mention the adjustment in 2020 with zero improvements. At a minimum, every voted levy should be capped at the approved $ until renewal, then we can review/deny at the renewal when it jumps another $1000+ a year.

Pretty sure that would be the county, not the state, that is adjusting your assessed valuation.

I agree that there are issues with the current system. But I am not going to support eliminating it entirely without a clear plan for either replacement or budget cuts (or both). Abruptly removing a source of tax revenue without any further plan runs a very high risk of ending up with something even worse. Would you be for eliminating property taxes even if that meant your total tax burden would actually increase? Because that is always a possibility.

I will also point out again that this is actually very much a local issue, not a state-wide one. Rates and valuations are primarily set at the county level (or lower). I don't see property taxes being particularly egregious in my AO. Are the ever-increasing valuations bullshit? Of course. Would it be better if the taxes were less? Also yes. But they aren't close to being a real problem here.

While I absolutely take issue with some of our taxation - more than anything how cities are able to tax you where you work, when that isn't where you live - I also recognize that we could be far worse off. My parents live in MO, and their rates for property tax, sales tax, and income tax are all higher and they have personal property tax, too.

Many of the farms in my township are no longer producing, likewise, in adjacent townships and incorporated cities within my school district.  Zoning plays a big role in taxes, at least it does in my AO.  My township requires a 2-acre minimum to build.  Two large parcels of property, totaling 600+ acres of farmland sold one town over (within the same school district) and developed on .5 acre lots, and they are taxed accordingly.  Being that schools are the biggest drain on property taxes, as property owner, we don't all pay the same.  I take issue with that.

My township has volunteer fire and a police force on an operating levy.  Which, technically, is a choice made by the residents.

I moved to OH in 96 from the not so great state of NJ.  I have friends who still reside there, most of them pay 14-20K a year in property taxes on a .5 acre lot with a mediocre home at best.  I'm sure we've all had our property values increase significantly over the last year or so:  I know many in Akron had their property values go up 30%.

SO, I ask myself, where does it all end?  Will I be paying 15-20K a year in property taxes in 2030 when I plan to retire, after I uprooted and moved to avoid all that shit?  I don't have all the answers, I'm not a civil engineer, or hold a degree in political science.  I do believe we need to fund local services, police, fire, public works etc. .. but not at the expense of keeping an asset that's paid for.  I own my truck, which is my property, and I don't get taxed on that every year.  Something's got to give.

The property tax issue is failed government, kicking the can down the road, and now it's come to a head.  While most in the private sector adjust to current economic and political environments, the public sector is status quo.   Politically, the pendulum doesn't swing moderately over the center point any longer.  It hangs up on the far left for a political term, then on the far right for another.  Perhaps I'm a simpleton, but no one in the .Gov has given a rats ass about the tax payer over the last 20 years, if not longer.  If this passes, which I hope it does and taxes then become consumption based, .. . so be it.  in VA, is costs 700-800$ to register a motor vehicle.  I went to Houston TX for work a few years ago, and I gagged at all the tolls, taxes for dining out and the extra 150$ tax on my rental car.  The .Gov will get its' money from somewhere and I'd prefer it not be the roof over my head.

This is where I'm at.  And there should be a some limiting principle on government spending in the state constitution.  So far there is none, it's just spend spend spend.  Yeah, there's a balanced budget requirement, but that just means government increases taxes to match spending.

Just did the math and it's a 42% increase on my taxable value this year.

My property taxes are 2.5x what they were when I bought the house 7 years ago. And the only thing we added was a $30k pole barn and cleaned up the yard.

Someone in my town is going around with the petition. Rightfully so.

And I made an appointment with the county for them to "explain" the increase. Can't wait to hear their BS justification

Talked to my neighbor today. They evaluated his property $70,000 over the appraisal that he just got from a professional appraiser. He went to the auditors office and said they were packed with pissed off people. They told him it'd be a while til they got to him, but they usually will adjust it to whatever the private appraiser says.

Might be worth it to pay a few hundred for a private appraiser to write me up a more accurate appraisal if they don't lower it otherwise.

Yeah, the appraisals are bullshit.  I live in Medina Co, but work in Summit.  Most of my peers at work reside in Summit Co.  Many I work with have all gone through the appeal process and in doing so, the question was asked, "how, or what did you base this appraisal off of?"  They were aerial appraisals done with drones, or off of google earth.  lol    Many went the SGT-Fish route and hired an appraiser out of pocket, to appeal the appraisal, to keep more money from coming out of their pockets.  There's nothing fair about this process, then again, life isn't fair all the time.  I know there are some who either question, or aren't in favor of the property tax legislation.  That said, I do agree we need to fund local services to maintain civil infrastructure, but that option isn't available.  Did anyone on the .Gov side of this ask themselves, "what happens if the taxpayers attempt to repeal the property tax?"  As if it could never happen, or perhaps we're all just sheep.

County Auditor must follow Ohio State Law. This is NOT a local issue. I asked my Auditor if a school could craft or word a levy that capped values at a certain level? This is their answer.

"The process of valuing property is consistent across the state per state law and the state constitution. Individual taxing authorities or local governments can place levies on the ballot to generate funds, but they cannot change the underlying system of property valuation."

This is not rocket science. STOP allowing tax increases to be tied to property values. Tie increases to cost of living or inflation rate. Any increase beyond a set point (like 2%) should require permission from those paying the tax. The State will not stop this without interdiction from the voting public. They could change on their own but to many fingers are in the pie at this point.

I don't know if other school districts are preemptively putting income tax measures on the ballot, but Amherst schools have an income tax levy on the ballot this election.  I've lived in Amherst for over 20 years and this is the first income levy, they have always been property tax levies.

Our school district has been trying to pass a levy for additional funds for years, which has failed by a fairly solid margin each time.  Now it's being reported they can take more without a vote for 2026, at the same time the property taxes are estimated to raise by 38%.

My biggest issue is the school taxes. I’d have to look and see but roughly 50% of mine is in school taxes and I never sent any kids to that school, and never will. I’d prefer to think we could come up with some type of reasonable change but it always winds up “being for the betterment children”……

The rationale is the educated populous is a benefit to the entire public, so the public schools are paid for by everyone regardless of if  a person directly uses the facilities. Personally I think there should not be any public schools.

I know full well what the rationale is. What I’m challenging is indeed the rationale of it. There is no direct benefit to me to pay for a school that I didn’t send anyone to. In a society where we pay to play, subscribe to things that we pay for, where does this rationale really fit in mainstream America today. Frankly, it’s more of a theory than a rationale.

One can argue that the educators are shit, or even that the current education provided is shit, and I don’t know that I would disagree, but to say an educated population is not a direct benefit to you is wrong, regardless of if you were publicly educated or had kids learn through public education.

Without public education a large portion of our country would be illiterate and unable to do basic math. They would have even less of an understanding of the history of America, and would rely 99.44% on the “science” provided via TikTok.

There would be Chicago everywhere.

Not having Chicago everywhere is a direct benefit to you.

On the other hand, part of the reason homes are valued by buyers is they’re in a good school district. If you live in a bad school district your home value probably reflects that by being lower than a comparable home in a better school district.

I’m seeing news stories now about school districts putting income tax levies on the ballot instead of property tax levies. They’re trying to stay ahead of the inevitable shift away from property tax based levies.

The state Supreme Court said school funding should not rely on property taxes so heavily. The same could be said for income taxes as well. One way or another we end up paying for schools, but it should come more indirectly from state funding.

Or just go to private schools for all students.

It seems to me the state, like the federal government, should have no part in education -- it's a local matter. Each district should be free to decide what to teach, how to teach it, and how to fund it.

We could debate direct and indirect benefits until the cows come home. My opinion is my opinion.

Regardless we’re paying for it for better or for worse. Sometimes I think I’m buying so many fundraiser items I’m finding the schools a second time.

That is still our tax dollars though, I guess I don't see the difference.
