Paramedic here....

Not sure where you live but you can check you local vocational school. They may have a program. I do know that C-TEC in Newark does. You may also check with your local fire dept. If they have volunteers they may pay for all your training. As far as cost and time in class...that depends on where you go.

Also check the local community colleges and major hospitals.  In NE Ohio, I believe Cuyahoga Community College teaches EMT and Medic classes.  I have also heard that the Cleveland Clinic of University Hospitals does too.

You are in Streetsboro, check out Maplewood Career Center, it is just a short drive down S.R. 14 from you in Ravenna.

I know an instructor in this course, and I highly recommend him.

You might also want to check out Akron General Medical Center or Akron City Hospital.  They both have programs.

I am going to be really honest, the classes are approximately a semesters worth of work plus clinicals and the pay sucks once you are done.  If you were trying to get a job in the fire service I would recommend it, otherwise its sort of a waste of time IMHO.

i was looking at it just from the standpoint of the benefit of having that kind of training, and more of a part time job like on the weekends or until im done with college.

Just something to be aware of - part time pay sucks. Most of the guys I know doing it work three or more depts to earn enough income. Also you will be the low man on the pole so don't go in thinking you are going to get the days and times you want. You would be getting the days and times no one else wants. I don't know much particulars on your side of the state, but I would look around and see if there are any volunteer or cadet programs in the area. You wouldn't get paid but they usually train you with little to no cost out of pocket.

IIRC, you were in the military.  I assume you had some sort of first aid training, so you basically know everything an EMT does.  Really isn't that much call for EMTs on the weekends.  Lots of private companies do no emergency transports to and from Dr. offices, dialysis, nursing homes, etc...not many of those things happening on a Sunday.  And the pay sucks.

If you want training, you would be much better off to take some sort of wilderness/improvised medical class.  I think TDI might offer something...hell even if it was a weekend class out of state you would probably still come out cheaper and with more realistic training over dropping ~$800 on EMT-B.
