I am from Texas...the Austin area exactly. My wife is having trouble finding work nearby and she is trying to get me to think about moving us back to Ohio where her family is. She has some contacts locally and it might be possible for her to secure a position around the Oxford area. Her Mom has ten acres near there and a little farmhouse...we'd have the gig for her locked in before we moved.
I own this place outright, so if we sold it we'd have a chunk of change in our pockets up there. The area is very rural and I know nothing about farming....cows maybe but a farm? We've talked about boarding horses but I don't know what I'd do for a living. What are the CCW laws up there like? Owning semi auto toys? (....uh several semi-auto toys as a matter of fact) Ranges? The job market? Hell, any info would help! |

Having spent my first 63 years in Ohio, and then retired to Texas...I prefer the Lone Star State.
Ohio is gun-friendly. CCW is easy. That's a big plus. Oxford is in Butler County, about 330,000 souls. Butler County, Ohio That's good you'll be in a rural area. In the larger cities, people are always in a hurry. For what, I sure as hell don't know. A lot of Ohioans are downright frantic. Half nuts to me. Speaking of nuts, you thinking about a business boarding horses? Just remember what a great Texan told me: "Half the people who own horses are plum loco––crazy!" You start boarding horses, and wait until you start getting: "the turn out times are wrong," or "the hay isn't quite right," or "separate my gelding from the mares because he gets crazy..." on and on...A good Ohio friend of mine who owns a huge horse boarding facility "carried" a friend's bill for about 2 years in back board because the horse's owner was laid-off. Promises, promises. The horse got abandoned. Owner just walked away from the board bill and horse. When my friend sold the horse, she's now getting sued by the dead-beat owner for $250k "emotional distress." ??? Plus, I have found out from my Ohio business experience that a whole lotta Ohioans are sue-crazy. They will sooner sue you than look at you. I know this is a generalization, but in the few businesses I owned in Ohio, I kept a lot of lawyers busy defending me. Slip and falls, age, sex, race discrimination cases, phoney worker's comp and unemployment claims to name a few. Unlike The Lone Star State, Ohio will hit you with a state income tax. It's robbery. The real estate taxes are not as high as in Texas. Big diff=water is cheap in Ohio. But you will freeze your hind quarters off in winter, so expect to pay thru the nose for natural gas, electric or propane to heat with. Summertime it's hot and humid, so the A/C runs. Gasoline and diesel, 'bout the same. Big city inner-city schools suck. Suburbs and consolidated county schools much better. LEO pretty decent, whether you're in a village or township. In general, I have found the cost of living a tad higher in Ohio. Homeowner and car insurance is higher for me at least. For me, the biggest difference is the people. Ohio sure as hell has some mighty nasty people. Sure the majority are ok––-but there's enough Ohioans with a burr under their saddle that are downright mean. They drive their vehicles mean; act mean; can't act decent. Maybe it's just me. I haven't found anyone with a mean streak in Texas! |

Maybe I need to change that to be a good Ohioan.

We've talked about boarding horses but I don't know what I'd do for a living. What are the CCW laws up there like? - decent, trying to make better: big thing on agenda is "restaurant carry" (in restaurants where alcohol served). - no limit on # guns you can carry, or # mags you can carry.. - no loaded long guns (this includes loaded mags even if removed from gun) allowed in vehicle - open carry is legal, but not permitted (illegal) in vehicle without CHL. - w/out CHL, no loaded guns in vehicle, period (this includes loaded mags or speedloaders even if removed from guns) Owning semi auto toys? (....uh several semi-auto toys as a matter of fact) - good, but be advised that guns are not permitted to be used w/ mags holding more than 30 rounds.. Ranges? - not familiar w/ ranges over there, but there may be one at Hueston Woods.. there are several sportsmans clubs that would be nearby (middletown sportsmans club, miamisburg sportsmans club...)? The job market? - mainly sucks, statewide unemployment is 11%, lots of automotive/manuf jobs hit hard.. Hell, any info would help! - oxford is a small college town in butler county (home to Miami U.) north of cincinnati, west of middletown/dayton. outside oxford is rural area, some good scenery, including Hueston Woods State Park, to the N. of town.. |
