Does OGCA run applicants through NICS before approval?

Heard that this was so - not sure if I believe it.

I'm a member.

I doubt if they can do a NICS check, background maybe.

All I remember from when I joined was that you had to have a couple of members sponsor you. As long as nobody objected, you were voted in at the next meeting. I think it took a year to get the full member badge.

I was a member for many years, but let it drop once they lost the IX Center show. The others were just too far of a drive for me.

A lot on money to attend what's just a big gun show.  Never any bargains at the IX Center.  I, too, just let my membership lapse when they moved to Dayton.

Wider aisles and less body odor were the only benefits.

My understanding is just like Waldo said 2 sponsers and if no objections from members you are in. I have been a member for many years and since leaving the I-X Center have only made it to Robertsville 2 times. That said I maintain my membership because I think it is important for gun organizations to maintain large numbers for lobbying efforts. OGCA is huge and probably plays a part in Ohio having some decent gun laws along with other organizations. It is more important now than ever to join pro gun organizations like OGCA, NRA and others. For us with 2 kids in the Military, Life membership in NRA and membership in OGCA is our only shred of hope with Obama knocking on the door.

They do not require a background check but you do need the blessings of two current members.  I gotta get down there soon.

Exactly.  This is why I joined OGCA years ago.  I figured as a gun owner living in Ohio I owed it to them to join.  Then they moved the shows to Roberts Center and I could actually attend the shows, which I think are better than the average gun show.  I think all Ohio gun owners should join the OGCA, but we can't even get all gun owners to join the NRA.  If every gun owner in the US belonged to two or three gun rights groups and actively voted, we'd never see another gun control law.

If you mean in political action, not much.  For me it's more about public relations, the image of the gun owner to the general public, and the impression made on legislators.  OGCA often has political types speak at their gatherings.  Believe me, when legislators know there is an organization with thousands of members versus one with only a few, they'll listen to the concerns of the larger group.  OGCA is the oldest and largest gun collector's group in the US as I understand, and I think it's good to support something like that, especially as an Ohio resident.

The articles in the newsletter by members about their particular collecting niche are interesting, and the displays are really interesting and educational at the display show.  They promote gun collecting and research, they give collectors a vehicle to share their knowledge, they give new collectors a place to learn, they give advanced collectors a reason to really work out their display and information, and to get that last piece to round out the collection.

Maybe a better way to look at it is what if nobody joined?  The older members die off and the OGCA dwindles to almost nothing.  What message does that send?  Does that help our cause?  I think it would be a bad thing, so I pay my dues.

If you want to join,I will sponsor you. Let me know if you will be attending the next show.(in January)I have been a member for almost 3 years now,and I have quit attending the Goodmans shows. The OGCA has very tight regulations on what can be sold at their shows. You will not see toys, beef jerky and alot of the TAPCO crap that you see at the Bill Goodmans shows.

The OGCA is a great organization. The member appreciation dinner is one reason to join. Where else can you enjoy a good meal and listen to patriotic music (Airforce band) under the nose of a B-52 bomber? Another reason is the shows themselves. They are better than most.

It looks like we have several people willing to help with sponsorships,so there is no excuse for anyone not to join. Is everyone good to go for the next OGCA show in January? Lets make this happen! The OGCA could use a few more guys/gals into the black rifles!

Max and Ermas inside the Roberts Center has plenty of room for a large AR15.com crowd. We could get a head count and reserve a table under AR15.com

There is no reason to join unless you live in Dayton or wherever their gun show members only meeting is being held.  Frankly it's just another gun show.  Big, maybe, with wide aisles, but that's the real deal.

A good reason to join is if you enjoy attending a gunshow/meeting with an outstanding group of people and without all the non-firearms related junk seen at the Goodmans circus. Not only are the(Wilmington,OH) OGCA shows bigger than the "other" shows(and with wider isles),you also wont see your inner city thug types lurking around. If you dont want to join,no problem,my post was directed at several people who contacted me about membership. There really is NO good reason not to join!

Years ago (10) my brother belonged.  Most people there were assholes.  The collectors are just there to rip people off IMO.  There is really no useful info that most of the collectors can give you.  As for non-collectible weapons, go to a regular gun show or a dealer.  You will get better service and probably lower prices.  That has been my experience anyhow.

Another good thing about OGCA is that most of the tables are collectors, not dealers.

I've been a member for 4 years now. In my experience everyone has been very helpful. They are collectors not dealers. They have expert knowledge in a certain area. I wouldn't ask a Colt SAA collector about Marlin rifles. The prices for most of the firearms are high. If you are a collector and need that last "whatever" to complete your collection, OGCA is the place to go. It isn't everyday that you get to hold a '73 Winchester "One of Thousand" worth more than my house.

I took a Stevens Single shot rifle that I found to the guy who wrote the book on Stevens. He quickly identified the rifle as a Walnut Hill 417 and provided me with value and year of manufacture.

If I was looking to buy a Glock 40 this isn't the place, although you may find one there. You would probably get a better price at Goodman's.

What i hate about the OGCA is the fact that all the lane sharks that go trolling for guns in the aisles and parking lots at Dave Goodmans Joke Shows got memberships. So they show up at the OGCA and get any good deals so the can take them the next day or next weekend and flip them for a profit. I dont mind guys getting rid of or picking up items for themselves, thats what the shows are about. Hell, even that jerkwad Ron Dixon that runs National Gun Days sets up at the shows. He cant get enough guns in Kentucky for his buisness ? If the show would run these FFL wannabes out it might be worth attending more often.

I live in Columbus, got sponsored and promptly let it lapse.  There was just nothing there that interested me.  AR/AK parts, ammo, gear were all scarce or high priced.  Some dudes dig it, I just didn't plus it is 50 miles away.

Well I used to like the fact that OGCA shows were no where near as packed as say the Sharonville or Dayton Goodman shows. Today by noon there were no parking spots anywhere, including the dirt overflow and behind the building. We left at noon and by then the inside of the show was starting to remind me of a Goodman show. Way too many people.

Since there is definitely a different type of gun at these shows maybe it won't last.

I am going to throw in my 2cents about the OGCA show.

When I was into hunting/older firearms I loved the show but they do not have the AR parts and sales like Bills does. I still love the show and enjoy going. People still are carrying around ARS and AKs but not in the volume of other show. Still worth the yearly membership comes out to what $5  a show? FYI OGCA is on the CMP list.

Here's my quick OGCA Show AAR.

My interests in firearms revolves around black rifles, enfields, garands and flintlocks.  With that in mind, I enjoyed my first OGCA show thoroughly.  The show is quite large and there's a wide variety of things to see - Garands, M1 Carbines, Enfields, 98k's, Luger pistols, 1911's, Pythons... original 19th century lever-actions and creedmore rifles... original flintlocks and percussion rifles and muskets... a couple of ammo dealers... and there was some AR/AK/SKS type stuff there too.

The show did get a bit crowded.  At the last Bill Goodman shows I've been to, the aisles were nearly completely gridlocked by noon.  We were at the OGCA show from about 11:30am until about 3:30pm and while crowded, we were still able to move freely through the aisles.

Sadly, the OGCA show isn't immune to price goudging on EBR-related items.  One table had GI 30rd magazines for $30 each, and another had Superior Arms stripped lowers for $200.  That was pretty .  Other dealers had "decent" prices GI 30rd mags for $20) though.  I did see more SP1's at this show than I've seen in the past several Bill Goodman shows.  My brother almost walked out with one, but resisted the tempation.  They were going for $1500ish.

I think for the $30 annual fee, which gets you into all 6 OGCA shows for the year, it's more than worth it.  I got a huge kick out of seeing things like original Charleville and "Brown Bess" muskets, and the $14,500 Creedmore rifle w/original wooden case and the documentation as to who used the rifle in 1874.

If one is strictly looking for good deals on black rifle related stuff, then it might not be that interesting.

Big thanks to Geezah and Slimslade for sponsoring my brother and me for membership!

I went for the first time a couple months ago.  Lots of CMP garands and the usual fair.  I would consider being a member, in fact, I grapped an application.

I noticed a space for my Social Security Number.  I asked the lady at the table if this was an outdated form, or if they require my SSN.  She said that they need the SSN for a background check.

Sorry, but no dice.  I am no going to willingly hand over my name, address, SSN, DOB, etc. to someone/group I don't know.  I would rather endure the Goodmans body odor folks than risk floating out another piece of paper with all my info on it.  Ever talk to a victim of identity theft?  It's an expensive/time consuming "adventure".

Until they come up with a way to forgo my SSN, i won't be a part of it.

The OGCA show was the best I've been to in years.  Tula1953r and Buckeye67 summed it up well in their posts above.

I let my OGCA membership laspe this time around....I live in the other side of the state, and can't justify driving 3 hrs one way to go to a gunshow..It was fun, and if they'd get another place to hold "meetings" besides Dayton/Cincy area, something more centrally located I'd be interested in rejoining, In the mean time, I rejoined the NRA...
