I recently traveled back to Sacramento to visit my parents for the holidays and my uncle was talking about his WASR when he said that "There's no bullet button for the AK that complies with the new regulations like they already have for the AR and I'm not sure what to do." He said that he talked to someone at a gun shop (I know, I know) and that person said that there weren't any options for the AK and that he was SOL. Of course that guy at the gun shop offered to buy whatever he has at well below market. So question is, are there any bullet button type options for the AK that comply with the new regulations? I did a search and couldn't find anything.

He can register it as an AW and keep the BB.

Or he could replace the BB with a proper mag release and go featureless and not register.

Featureless means no "evil" features.  But you can use a regular mag release.
So no flash hider, he could use a brake like the Russian slant brake or any of the many others.
No collapsible stock.  Fixed stocks only.  If he has a folder it can be replaced or modified to not collapse.
No pistol grip.  This sounds terrible but it ain't bad.  Google kydex wrap or Monsterman grip or any one of the various grip replacements.
No front grip.

eta Also wanted to add that the deadline to register is 12/31/2017, heck the registration system isn't even working yet.  He has a while before he has to do anything.  No panic.  Very real possibility that someone smarter than me will create an alternative solution.

eta And there are legal challenges to be filed.  Hang tight.

I came across this AK mag lock. Hopefully someone creative will come up with other products.

Yep, I remember all of that. It would appear that he's pretty set on BB's. I brought up registering, and he promptly said "Screw that."

Sweet. I'll keep an eye on that and let him know. I'd probably wait until they're deemed kosher before recommending he buy one. Thanks.

ETA: Looking at that lock again I like it more and more. I'll definitely have him keep an eye on that.

I've got a Romy G that I had built and a Draco. Been wondering what I should do with them. Think I'm going with that mag lock for now. Someone suggested to pin the mag release, that's also an option.
