So I have been in Cali a lot lately. All over the place, LA, San Fran, Redwood City, Oxnard, Plesant Valley, Sacramento, San Luis Opisbo...20 weeks so far this year. But for the rest of the year I'll be in Sacramento exclusively (I go back home to Dallas on the weekends).
So what are the 'must do' things for a Texan in Sacramento? The past couple weeks I've been in Old Town (I'm at Ten 22 right now enjoying some Lagavoulin). |

Did you check out the train museum in old town Sac, it's pretty cool and worth a look. There is an underground tour in old town that I here is worth doing as well. You are also not to far from the California Auto Museum.
Discovery Park has some nice river access, although if you want to check out the river for free head over to Sutter's Landing. GoKart Racer or K1 has indoor carting if you are looking for something fun to do indoors on a hot day. Otherwise their is the IMAX theater downtown that is walkable from old town. If you walk to the IMAX take a quick look in Dive Bar if it's later at night, they have a giant salt water tank above the bar and have girls dress up like mermaids and swim in it, fun to take a look and see. If you want to go out on the water check out the Sac State Aquatic center, they rent Kayaks, paddle boards, etc. They also rent bikes if you want to ride down the american river bike trail. For Food and Drink: If you want a good sandwich check out Sampino's or Roxie Deli. If you want some beer selection and an easy bite check out either Der Biergarten or the Federalist Public House. Their is also the Pour House which is a prohibition style bar that serves really good food, best bet is breakfast their. If you like good coffee definitely check out Temple Coffee, very good local company. Tank House has some decent BBQ for BBQ in a popular area, more of a good place to start if you want to go out and enjoy some night life later. Krush Burger is just north of down town under the CA Lotto building and sell award winning sliders. Their is a lot of good food in Sac way, the Farm to Fork festival is coming up at Sept 26, expect to see lots of food deals and events going on leading up to the festival. If you are really bored, lots of CA politicians like to do coffee meet and greets, can be fun to ask them questions that clearly piss them off and ruin there planned liberal circle jerk. Hopefully that gives you some ideas, if you are looking for something more specific let me know and I will try and give you some suggestions. Enjoy your stay! |

There are some cool caverns and gold historical stuff to the east, around El Dorado County. Cavern in Murphys is VERY small, but neat. Even if your not a big wine drinker, hit up some wineries; then you can say you've been there. Take the train from Davis to Emeryville (be sure to have lunch at the marketplace across the tracks from the station, espically if you like Korean/Chinese & other food like that[bbq-Korean chicken,,,,) Second on the train museum; they also have restored steam engines running in Woodland, outside San Jose, Niles Canyon and state RR museum in Sac. not much in the way of cool gun stuff, but it's been 12 years since i moved back to Bastrop & from what I can tell it's only gotten worse,,,
ETA; there is a guy in Yuba City (30 miles north) that has/had a wharehouse full of walnut stock blanks,,, might be worth the trip. If you're into fudd guns, look around for old gun shops/smiths, you'd be surprised what you find. |
