For shit's sake...  I'm just getting around to bitch about this.  I was in the Safeway on Mangrove on New Year's Day.  When I went to the self-checkout, I noticed there were no more plastic bags.  That figures, because the city banned them.  So I grabbed some paper bags and use those.  At the end of the self-checkout process, the computer prompts me to enter how many paper bags I used.  "Per city ordinance, we must charge $0.10 for each paper bag."

Now paper bags are compostable.  They also require very little energy to make.  Why in the name of everything sane and proper would you ever restrict usage of paper bags?!

Some days, I just want a giant meteor to come down and wipe this whole place out.

The grocery stores were against the plastic bag ban until the gov told them they will make money by being required to charge for the paper bags.

I think we should just say "you're kidding me" and walk out and leave the groceries on the counter!

And the irony is the tree huggers are the ones who insisted on the plastic bags to save the trees in the first place.

I should totally buy a box and pass them out at the store entrance.

EDIT:  Oh, before I forget, the last time I was in Safeway they didn't even have paper bags.  You had to go to the cashier to get them.  "People weren't paying for them.  They were always entering that they didn't use any."

The store turned bags from a loss to a profit ... I'm almost certain they bitched really hard about the extra money they made.

That works up until the point the fridge is empty.
