This is how I chose to remember it:

OCIR was right next door

OC was a really cool place

I was stationed there in 1980. The Green Knights A6 Intruders. I guess the strawberry fields outside the fence line behind our barracks is gone.

I teach at school on former base property.  At least they did not remove the hangers.

Yep. Building a bunch of homes on it now.

New homes are very close, on the other side of Irvine Blvd, but not actually on the base property - from what I can tell.  Miss the annual airshow and seeing the FA-18s.

The Orange County Great Park will take up a big chunk of the old base, and there will be housing developments eventually too.

March lives on as an Air Force Reserve Center with the refueling mission still on-going. The F-16's fly in every so often bringing a big smile to my face as I hear them overhead.

Used to go to the air shows, great fun. Unfortunately attended one show where an F-86 flew into the runway at the bottom of a loop, but great memories. Gone now, OC is mostly under concrete, and has become the bastion of suburban mediocrity.

I grew up near there as well. Just up El Toro rd in Trabuco. One of my fond memmories of living there was talking on the phone and going "hold on there's a jet going over..."

I drive by March frequently on the 215.  Haven't yet had the time to stop and go to the museum.

If I'm not mistaken, March was the location of the first Bob Hope show for servicemen ever, at the beginning of WWII.

ETA, yup, 1941, USO show.

Our shop is off lake forest and was under the flight path. When i started alot of our customers knew that so when the secratary would say hold on plane coming in they would stop talking til it went by then resume. The jets came in pretty low it was cool to see. Some days they were were getting alot of flight time in.

We are also working on alot of the new homes going up around the base including the ones mentioned o nthe other side of irvine blvd.

My last visit to El Toro was the day the FA-18 did a belly flop at the airshow. Quite a sight.
