12+ years ago I bought 2 like new shotguns from my neighbor (an 870 and an 1100). We never got around to doing any paperwork on em and he is long gone to another state. At the time I didn't think I was doing anything wrong. I was ignorant to the laws..I do not know the history of these guns before I bought em.

So I talked to a local gun shop a few days ago about this, he gave me a form (Firearm Ownership Record) to send to The DOJ

I'd like to get some thought from you all on what I should do about these two guns.

You should have received a bill of sale (some type of receipt) from the previous owner at least. Maybe a cancelled check? If they are stolen you have a problem, and are out your money at minimum. I would talk to an attorney if you do not have a bill of sale. If you do, I would feel comfortable sending in the form.  -W

That would be the "right" thing to do.  Although I expect the majority opinion here will be to do nothing.  I'm pretty sure that back then you wouldn't have needed to go through an FFL.

The requirement to use a CA FFL dealer began on 01-01-1991.

The form doesn't ask for a receipt or sellers name. It doesn't seem like anybody I talk to has any experience with this form.

I think he may have been talking about the bill of sale to cover you when the nice agents come knocking if it is turns up stolen when they run it.  Without you having proof you bought it, it will be a much less pleasant, much longer conversation.

Long guns are not In the Gun Registry system. Handguns are the only ones in the system.  All law enforcement officers can tell you this. But their is the small issue should lord forbid your weapons are ever confiscated or stolen you will need to provide proof of ownership which DOJ will not be able to.

If you don't have a bill of sale or receipt, and you put in the form, and the guns come up stolen they will be knocking on your door and you are the responsible party.  You would be in possession of stolen property.  Saying I didn't know it was stolen won't get you off the hook.  A receipt with someones real name as the seller (you say you knew the guy, a neighbor) likely would. I am not an attorney, and I wouldn't want to give bad advice. That's why I recommended asking a lawyer about it. -W
