Go ahead and have it threaded, as long as you keep in mind:

In CA the description "pre-ban" should also mean the rifle is a Registered Assault Weapon (RAW). If it is not a legal RAW, you would be in trouble if it retains all original features. Not good.

If you have a RAW, go ahead and thread the barrel. ADCO is a great place to send it for the work.

If you don't have a RAW its a post ban rifle. If it is a bullet button type rifle, you can still have the barrel threaded.

If you don't have a RAW or bullet button rifle, then you must have a featureless build. Then it becomes an issue of which features your rifle retains. Go look at the Calguns website for the best information for your situation.

I have a RAW I contacted a company in San Fernando Ca. All they told me was they thought it would be illegal.  Thinking something is illegal isn't the same as being illegal.

If the RAW shows a 20 inch barrel does that mean if I have the work done it has to finish at 20 inches?

You may get better results posting in th CA HTF.

Since you have a RAW, thread the barrel and mount the flash hider.

You can swap uppers and run a 16" barrel if you want as well. You can swap out the buttstock from rifle to carbine style if you want.

You have a California RAW (Registered Assault Weapon).
You can change ANYTHING you want to on it (other than making it an SBR with a barrel less than 16 inches).

Go Wild.

And for clarification, threaded barrels are okay on all longguns in California.  Califonia does not consider a threaded barrel an assault weapon feature unless it is on a handgun.
