Hello,

My girlfriend's grandmother and step grandfather have decided they want to purchase a home defense firearm.  My feeling is they are the type of people who will buy it, load it, and put it in a drawer to collect dust, but that's irrelevant.  They've asked for my help, so I'm asking for yours.

This is not a thread to debate the merits of different home defense firearms.  The possible choices are pretty much limited to revolvers or shotguns.  Her grandmother has no firearms experience, and her step grandfather was in the Marines many moons ago, so his experience is limited to whatever he had access to back then.

So the help I need is this:
What are the best gun stores you can recommend near Mission Viejo?  I'm looking for a place that will be very trustworthy, patient, and if possible, have a range with rentals.

L.A. is my birthplace, but I haven't lived in CA since 1993, so while I know your situation isn't the best, I don't know exactly what they're going up against as far as applicable laws and firearm selection.  What should I know to prepare them for, and what are some firearm options I can give them to look into?

Thanks guys!

On Target has a indoor range in Laguna Nigel. I can't comment on how the service is there, as I have never shopped there.

On Target

There is also the Firing Ling in Huntington Beach. It's been almost 10 years since I have been there, so I can't comment on the service.

Why don't you sign them up for a NRA FIRST class? It's on there web site. They can get familiar with the firearm, and the range while a instructor is there to guide them.  Also, why would one need a home defense firearm if one lives in Mission Viejo? Lol! The closest range would be On Target in Laguna Niguel. They will have the rentals you need.

On Target at Crown Valley and the 5fwy is the closest to MV, maybe 3-5miles from them depending on which part of MV they are in.  There they will be able to rent numerous brands, calibers, and configurations of hand guns to see which they feel most comfortable handling and firing.

Then, they can make a better decision on which handgun to purchase and start shopping around for a good deal and the dozen or so gun stores within 30min of MV.

It may be best for you to help them narrow down the process by helping them decide auto or revolver first.  Revolver may be the simpler way to go considering their age. Keep it simple, right?

Then, once the decision is made which gun, the way in which they are going to store it comes into play.  For purely home defense, they may want to purchase a wall clock/picture frame that conceals the gun for quick/easy access (if there are no grand kids visiting often).  That way the gun is not stuck in a drawer somewhere or a safe that they cannot access quickly.
