Typical to have a high retainer in divorces. Sorry you have to go through one.

Some day you'll be able to laugh at this riddle:

Why are divorces so expensive?

.
Because they're worth it.

Hopefully there's no kids involved and the marriage was short. Good luck.

You only need a lawyer if you disagree with what she is filing.  You may be forced to pay for her lawyer too.  Wait to see what she has filed.  If she is trying to stick it too you, then get a lawyer.  I imagine since 5K is a lot to you, then there itnt a lot to protect.

Its a cost / lost ratio.

If she is trying to stick you with years of support, or grab your 401K, it might be worth it.  If she is just looking to end the relationship...just let her.  She will have to file a property settlement agreement.  its explains who is doing what and getting what.  if you both dont sign it, its not legal.  the court will not screw you, but they are not there to help you either. if she lies to them about you being served, everything is null.

neither of you need a lawyer.  just call her and dont be a jerk, if she starts being a bitch, just be nice and end the conversation.  have her send all the paperwork to you.

You can also hire a local lawyer to look over any paperwork sent to you.

If there are kids envolved...get a lawyer NOW.

I traded everything I owned except 1 seabag filled with clothes for freedom...it was well worth it.
