I live in Southern California and was wondering if anyone has had any experience in buying an AR-15 in the last couple years in CA?
What did you do to the guns, what did you have on them, where do your fire them, and most importantly, any problems with law enforcement? Thank you. |

My advice is go to www.calguns.net
Bottom line there is a list of certain lowers that are banned by names. IE Colt, DPMS, etc All lowers NOT on list are OK to buy. Noveske, LMT, Stag, S&W, Spikes, etc etc etc etc (known as OLLs or Off List Lowers) Bottom line the California lawmakers messed up (good for us bad for them) when they wrote the law and did not have a provision to add new makes and models as they came online. Second part of equation is the AR can NOT have any "evil" features or use a magazine that accepts more than 10 rounds. They way you comply with the "evil" features part of the law is to have a "bullet button" mag release that replaces the stock mag release. When it is installed the only way to drop the mag is with the tip of a tool. A tool CAN be a bullet, that is why it got the name bullet button. With this installed the AR is considered a fixed magazine rifle. Like a SKS in fact the SKS is the model that the fixed mag AR really takes after. You can also have a non "evil" feature AR (NO pistol grip, flash hider, folding stock, foward pistol grip, etc) then you can use a standard mag release and use your pre-(California)ban 30 round mags. Ok all that said, I would do your own research. Go to the site. Also for those that a photo is worth a thousand words here is a flow chart that will help. http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf |
| I second going to calguns.net. Basicly a rifle can have features like a flashhider a pistol grip and a collapsible stock if it has a ten round that is considered non detachable. A magazine isn't considered detachable if you have to either take the rifle apart to remove the mag or if you have to use a tool to remove the mag. California considers a round of ammunition a tool. That's why people build rifles with bullet button mag releases. With a bullet button you can't push the release in with your finger but you can push the release in with a "tool" that is pointy like a round of ammunition. You can also build feature less rifles too. Here's more info: http://www.tenpercentfirearms.com/index.php?main_page=ar15 Mark |

I do a lot of reading before posting. There are TONS of threads on California AR building/ownership. You can find out what's legal and what's not just by walking into a gun store. If you buy one from a gun store you'll be fully legal and won't have to worry about anything. Its when you build one yourself the questions arise as to legality.
Bullet button allows you to have the apperance of a standard carbine with a 10 round mag. Monsterman grup and the funky stock allow you to use 30 round mags but you need to look into that. Like I said, READ A LOT MORE. You'll find everything you want to know by searching and reading. |
| Do yourself a favor and move. I was very active on calguns and had 3 AR's built. I got tired of all the BS and moved to texas last year and Never looked back. My first gunshow here and I was able to buy an AR in less than 20 minutes. Walked right out the door with it. |

We're putting up a good fight here as partisans in a tyrannical state that hates us, which is at it's heart, heroic. Abandoning our homeland only gives in to the oppressors. To the OP, welcome to the boards, and give calguns a visit, too. |
