| Are there any ar-10 lower recievers that are california legal? |
I have read from other sites that its hard to build an ar-10 because some parts dont work? Is that true? Has anyone built one yet that can show me a pic? I went on there site and found it 399.99 for the lower??? Any cheaper places? The whole rifle will cost almost 1500-1600 to build does that seem about right?

Most .308 AR parts are not interchangable between the different manufacturers. For example, ArmaLite and DPMS are mostly not parts compatable. .308/7.62 AR builds will run with 2 to 3 times more than a 5.56/.223 build. So, $350-450 for a stripped lower is the correct price range. |
This is all Correct and I'll add a little to it. I was unaware that anyone else besides POF and Fulton and DPMS were makeing interchangeable lowers to DPMS uppers. I'm glad to see another company teaming up with Armalite. I went with a Fulton Armory Stripped Lower, because I like the DPMS version a little better and DPMS does "FREE SHIPPING and 10% Military Discount". I'll give you a break down of what parts cost. Fulton Lower Stripped $395, shipping $35, DROS (in Minnesota) $25, .308 LPK $95, A2 .308 stock $95, TAC-20 Upper Reciever $808 with upgrades, 2 - 20 round mags were $60 plus shipping (I paid $60 for both, retail is $60 each) So when it's over it will have cost a little over $1500, I'm currently waiting on the upper reciever and mags still. It's going to be a fun gun to shoot, I've shot the SR-25 & MK-11, I love the AR/M16 platform, I can't wait to get this beast into my shoulder to hammer some lead down range. Biggest draw back over the price of how much a .308 AR costs to build, is what it is going to cost to feed it ETA: The mags are alot cheaper on the EE from 44mag..com the used parts market isn't that great for the .308, but if you watch the AR10 EE you can find some decent deals, there was a CA member not that long ago selling the same upper I have ordered for $675... so there are deals out there, you just have to watch. DPMS also sends out alot of coupons for 10% off, ie St Pattys day, Economy Stimulation... so it's not just the military thats getting a 10% discount, and free shipping with online orders. |

DPMS no longer calls it a " TAC-20 ", if you go onto thier website online store, go to .308 assemblys, you will see one with standard A2 plastic handguards, from there you click on build it now and it will give you the option to get the railed handguards that are normally associated with the " TAC-20". here is the link to the dirrect dpms barrel assembly, you still have to click the "build" and then accessorize. http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=5311&cat=1607 |
Fulton & DPMS have the same design, all of thier uppers and lowers are interchangealbe, the parts kits and stocks are interchangeable. For what it's worth, I heard DPMS makes the lowers for Fulton, then Fulton Roll Marks them and finishes them. I believe Fulton just adds a little to the price of small parts just to make a few dollars on them, but they do have the "Fulton Name". DPMS & Fulton uppers will fit on POF lowers if you buy a sleave. I don't know if the POF upper will fit on a DPMS or Fulton lower? DPMS & Fulton magazines are the same design, I honestly don't know what magazines the POF uses? Armalite uppers will fit Noveske lowers, but I don't know what magazine they take either. The .308 Armalite, DPMS & Fulton barrels with interchange, but the DPMS/Fulton use a different barrel nut. Most free float tubes are designed for one manufacture or the other .308 AR's are the unicorn of AR's - make sure you do your research or stick with what you know will interchange. RRA .308 is off on it's own, it is supposed to be improved over the old Bushmaster design, but only time will tell if the RRA is improved over the Bolt Breaking Bushmaster design, it is supposed to take cheap FAL mags... but don't quote me on that one either. KAC's SR-25 or MK11 is a unicorn of itself. I heard KAC mags will fit the DPMS design but I've never tried it... I'm no longer with a unit that has a MK-11 or SR-25, but I could give it a try sometime? I believe the KAC is on the "banned list of CA". Personally I went with the Fulton Lower and DPMS everything else... DPMS has been doing various caliber AR's for some time now... even though Armalite was the originial AR-10 design and has a good enough reputation, I just liked the options that DPMS has on the market and thier reputation. |
ok, my AR-15 has a fulton lower and dpms upper and trigger, i will be doing the same for the ar-10, but what size upper do u reccommend? I was thinking of 18 or 20. And which barrel should i get?

That mostly depends on what you're going to use it for. At first I wanted a 16" upper, but a 20" upper is ballistacally better for longer range shooting. Also a 16" upper on a .308 generates quite the fire ball. Most of us, and I'll use that generally, don't need a Short Barreled Rifle, we use our AR's for target shooting and mild hunting, honestly they're big expensive toys/tools, that's my opinion anyway. So haveing a 16" M4-gery in 5.56mm, with an extra 18" SPR upper, I chose to go with a 20" .308 more for the long range capabilities and hunting. My wife has a NM and I'm building a SAM-R clone upper for her as well, great fun, but they serve only one purpose, range time, with mostly long range shooting and hunting varmits. There's a big difference in swinging a 16 or 18 or 20 inch barrel while trying to clear a hallway, but I have other guns for that, the $400 XD-40 is for anyone that enters uninvited... I'm not going to use a $1k+ AR to defend my home. I don't have the time or space to reload, so the .308 AR isn't exactly going to get rapid fired or put through drills like my M4-gery. ETA: This is my personal opinion by the way, the only thing scientific is the 20" barrel haveing better balistics over a 16". |
