I know you can purchase shotguns in CA but are there any laws that prohibit buying certain ones or anything? I want a Remington 870 eventually.

No semi-auto shotguns with more than 10 rounds nor any with folding or telescoping stocks.  Any Remington 870 with an 18"+ barrel (Federal law) is legal.

There is a sticky at the top of this forum with gun laws in it.  Read it.

If you want a Remington 870, check out Turners weekly ads at www.turnersoutdoorsman.com.  They often have 870 models (Sporting as well as home defense) available for sale.  Any of those are a great start.

Big 5 has Mossberg 500s with 18" barrel and 7 round magazine for $219 every now and then.

Just to clarify....is buying a shotgun the same as a handgun with the waiting period and stuff?

I want that exact one. I wanted to get one of those Surfire forearm lights for it.

I bought this one a few months ago. My friends son is 10 yrs. old and was able to shoot it. The recoil is really reduced for easy re-acquiring of target.

That's not the way I understand it.  THERE IS A STICKY AT THE TOP OF THIS FORUM WITH THE GUN LAWS IN IT.  READ IT.

12276.1

(a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:

(6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
(A) A folding or telescoping stock.
(B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.

It is not just like buying a handgun but it does require the same 10 day waiting period.

Check Big 5 Sporting Goods too. I think they have 870s on sale and with a rebate.

big5 is cheaper than turners, by about 10 bux. if you  buy a NIB rem from any dealer you qualify for the rebate. big 5 has/had 8 shot rem 870s for $319, and they are more often on sale than turners

More then likely they don't know the laws.  I have never seen a Benelli M4 at the range.

I'm curious about this too. For a long time I never saw pistol gripped semi-autos at the gunshop but now they're stocking Remingtons and Benellis with pistol grips and telescoping stocks. Maybe there's been a legal ruling recently that has changed things?

I regularly see telescoping stocks on pump shotguns, but have yet to see one for sale locally that was installed on a semi-auto shotgun.
