Well folks, I'm here (actually got here yesterday, spent last night at a motel in Barstow).

Still undergoing sticker shock trying to find a new home.

Beautiful state you have here.  I don't know how you guys suppress yourselves when the Texans brag about their state's diversity of terrain and ecosystem.  CA winds hands down.

But they have trees that sprout pistol grips, and there aren't any Liberals to be found. <cough> Austin </cough>

Welcome to California.

You may want to rent for a while as the market is starting to level off, turning into a buyers market (hopefully). But intrest rates will probably go up soon too. Hope you brought your job/income with you. Basrstow isn't known for its tech jobs.

I'm in Monterey.  Spent the night before arriving here - in Monterey - in Barstow.  As such, I was technically in California the day prior to my post - even though I had just arrived to my destination when I posted.

I suppose I could have clarified that a bit better.

Monterey = expensive.  I do plan on renting - won't be here long, and still haven't sold my place in CO.  Yes, I did bring the Job along - it sent me here.

I may have found home today, though - it sure is a competititive and expensive market to find a nice place to rent.

Nobody could out brag a Texan!

Welcome to the state. I would advise that if possible you hold off on buying a home for the next 9-12 months as I believe that the MINOR correction that we're in now will continue for a WEE bit and then return upwards in a year give or take.

.  Paul is right.  The housing in Barstow/Victorville area is not that expensive compared to that of Los Angeles.  Actually you are not that far from L.A. County, Palmdale Calif,(home of Edwards AFB is about an hour drive or so).

Bohr_Adam: Welcome to the High Desert!

I grew up in Barstow in the late 1960s.  When I lived in Barstow, there was some empty land between the east side of town and the Marine Corp Supply Depot.  But now the town has pretty grown right up to the front gates of the base.  Of course Ft Irwin NTC, just 30 minutes out of town.  The air is clean and the sky is a deep blue, unlike that of L.A. because of dust in the air, it is just light blue.  Enjoy your stay.

You're in the expensive part of the state.  If you have a chance take a weekend drive up and down the Calif coast on Highway 1, like pass Carmel etc(home of Clint Eastwood), and visit to Solvang.

Having read the whole post it's obvious you went from the ridiculous to the sublime.  Have you checked out Seaside or Salinas areas for rentals?

Definitely head down 1

I used to live in Monterey, yes, it is expensive, but, IMHO, worth it. Pacific Grove is beaqutiful too, get ready to explor neighboring communities and be awestruck at the scenery and stuff to do. Our gun laws suck, but the resources of this state are unreal!

If ya like to people watch, head over to Santa Cruz and watch the hippies. They're entertaining.

Salinas IMHO a lil on the crowded and ghetto side, Seaside isn't bad and has potential.

Hah!  Not even one week and I've already experience my first taste of California bashing: www.jobrelatedstuff.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=495615&page=4&#-1.

I endured two days of shitty luck and looking at "so-so" homes and condos and apartments - only to be told that several applications were already in and I had no chance - OR they had just been rented out.  Many were in Seaside - Salinas was too far away, and I was about to add Marina to the net.

Then I stumbled across the ONLY property thus far that I REALLY liked.  Called the owner, said I was interested - but she said their were other applicants ahead of me here as well.

Laid on the charm... and, well, I'm just glad to say that California women are as susceptible to the ol' Adam charm as much as the rest - moved in yesterday afternoon!

My back yard faces out to the Monterey Forest Preserve, I have plenty of parking, great views, and as long as I restrain myself from killing the deer that infest this area like cancer, I think it will do nicely - and only a 1.6 mile drive to the High Street gate at the Presidio - whihc is just a block form where I will need to go every day - and I will avoid every heavy traffic corridor, since my way in is by back roads and through a park.

Amazing. Change your geographical location to California and you automatically become a liberal.

And apparently, you automatically became a "gal" too.

Y'know, I have had this inexplicable urge to hug one of those trees in my backyard... .

Ahh well, I'm off to go find a hippie commune to join.
