Just paid for my Bushmaster Cali legal rifle today.  Pick up in 10 days...  The design looks pretty good, I'm concerned about the carbon frame though.  My experience with carbon composite is that some of the material begins to change color after a few years of direct sunlight...

Since the gun has a functioning mag release, etc., my question is assuming I am to move out of state (lol) can I just open up the bottom of the lower, remove teh fixed magazine, and use a bushmaster mag?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. :)

Sorry my first post.  I meant to combine with the other thread.  Can any moderator move it over there please?

Thanks!

Congratulations, welcome to the forum. I have no experience with the carbon fiber bushy's, but if you do a search in ar15.com, you can probably find a lot of info.

I'm not sure cutting carbon fiber is easily done without screwing up the lower.

I am assuming the upper and lowers are ar15 compatible, I would just recommend, after moving out of CA, buying an aluminum forged lower receiver (STAG/CMT, Bushy, eagle or any of a number of manufacturers) and installing the upper on it and selling the CA compliant lower to someone in CA.

Hmm, on second thought, if you do leave CA, sell the whole rifle and buy a regular AR15, one with a foreward assist, ejection port cover, etc. and you don't have to worry about the carbon fiber.

I saw one for the first time the other day but did not check it out well enough to give you an accurate answer..I have one I built years ago on a Fab 10 lower, and a bushy upper.  The only downside to the Fab 10 is there is no mechanism to hold the bolt open.. It gets awkward ( read hairy) sometimes if the rifle jams and you have to open it under pressure.....When I leave ca. I will buy the bushy lower..Good Luck with your new rifle...

I handled the one at City Arms in Pacifica.  I believe the price was $960. This one had a M4 barrel and a nice BUIS, not sure the maker on it.  It defenitely felt front heavy. If it were mine I'd get the Bushmaster superlight 16" barrel.

The collapsing stock was a little wobbly but not too bad.  When looking at the rifle from the side I could see a fair amount of light through the gap between the upper and lower.  Not a lot but more than my XM-15E2S.

The push pin moved nice and easy and popping it open was a snap. The bolt hold-open was a nice feature. There is a metal sleeve in the carbon upper to protect it from the wear from the bolt carrier.

I thought the rifle was good enough quality for the price if you have to have that type of AR.  My only worry is that if you are popping the rifle open after every 10 rounds (rather than say every 200 or more on a regular AR) the wear inflicted on the carbon fiber is pretty high.  I know it's supposed to be harder (stiffer?) than aluminum, but it makes me uncomfortable to have the heavy upper swinging open, putting stress on the front push pin hole, and the rear hole taking the wear of the pin sliding back and forth every 10 rounds.

BTW I agree with the above poster, if you move just sell it to another californian.  You'll get more than enough money to buy a standard AR in your new state.

As long as you move out of CA, it does not matter anyway. Just sell your CA version firearm(s) to Californians. The money should be more than enough to buy other "regular" good firearm(s) in those free state.

The (law-abiding-gun-owing) Californians have been ripped off for a long time. Every firearm involved in "CA-legal" mombo-jumbo is crappy.

For example, DSA sells regular FAL rifles around $1000, but $1500+ for CA versions. The modification involved is 10-round mag, mag release and optional receiver cover. It's worth 50% more of the price? Give me a break.

GaryH429, enjoy the time out of CA.

If you move out of state, just take a Dremal tool and cut open a mag opening.
