from time to time i check out this website:

California Legal Assault Weapons

a decent source of info, although i don't know how entirely accurate everything is in the legal side of things.  anywho, on there is a link to a place to build a sten from a kit.   SemiAutoSten

my questions are as follows:
1. is a sten prk legal?
2. how hard are parts and mags to come by?
3. anyone every built a sten from a kit?

You've raised questions I've wanted to ask.
I've been on that site several times, and I dont think the 1919 is leagal either.  Does anyone know if it is?

I got a 1919 and its very legal,so legal that the ATF already inspected it at my FFL's shop.It just happened to be sitting in his gun vault when the ATF did there yearly inspection. They thought it was very cool.I also have the DOJ letter confirming its legal. So if you want buy 10 1919's while you can get em!

A 1919 semi auto version is CA legal. Old Sac Armory sells them.
www.oldsacarmoury.com/military.htm

Being that they are only a couple blocks from the CA DOJ offices I doubt they would be selling them if they were not CA legal, as it says on the web site.

its legal because the trigger is set behind the receiver...
Something like that.

I'd like to invest in one of those some day. Too bad 100 round belts count as magazines. Means ur stuck with 10 round belts, (unless of course u had some before the ban)

That would be interesting to build, I always wanted a Sten gun.

The Tannery now sells 80% receivers with blocked mag plates. $105 and you still have to finish the receiver.

I emailed DOJ with the pic from the home page of semiautosten.com. The reply I got indicated that the wire stock with the support bar could be considered a thumbhole stock, so no go.

If you bought it as a kit, and manufactured some wood filler pieces to go in the wire stock, I would think it should pass muster.

The true "passing muster" test happens after a cop confiscates the rifle to let the courts decide. So now you get dragged through the court system, only to beat the charges (lets hope), with a big hole in your pocket.

Is your thumb even supposed to go in there?

Anyways just get a wire stock instead..

What about the Kel-Tec SU-16? Anyone seen it being sold in the PRK and/or heard anything from Herr Lockyear about it?

It's in a local gun store, they are selling them to individuals.

Anyone know exactly which CA gun stores are selling the SU-16?

I don't think it would be considered to have a folding stock since the gun is inoperable when the stock is folded-  more like a disassembly latch if you ask me.
