Wanted to make a thread on this to detail the progress. In March there was a leadership change at MGAC and we have been doing big things to give the range a makeover maximizing our available space for the shooting sports.
For those who haven't been out to MGAC in a while - there are now something like 40+ pistol lanes with a full 25 yards of available target space. The old 65 yard berm has been moved back so we have almost 20 benches with 100 yards. This means if you want to shoot your .44mag pistol or .22LR rifle at 100 yards - you can. Previously we would not have allowed it as the round would not have carried to the 480 yard berm and skipped off the ground. Additionally, for ARFCOM members who rent out Area 51 it is completely unrecognizable. It is not finished yet by any means, but big work has begun. Area 51A and Area 51 are now separated by a berm that stops even with the covered shooting area. You don't have to drive into the woods to get to Area 51 anymore. Area 51 also has a 25y pistol berm, it actually has a berm located on the west, and we are replacing the back berm to be actually accessible. Before if you wanted to place anything on the back berm you needed a tractor to get there or risk getting eaten by alligators
Pics removed - stupid photo bucket. Aside from earth works we've also got iPads for check in, an office that looks like an office and not a shed for tools, and I am working on getting reasonably priced ammo for sale shortly. The days of $27/box for reloaded 9mm are over. Shortly we will have an online membership portal where you can renew your membership, reserve ranges, and all sorts of stuff. FYI - I am affiliated with the club, but I literally make a salary of $0. I'm not really sure what the site rules are for just passing along info. We are a non-profit and no one makes any more or less money whether you come or not. |

thanks for the update.
I have a request: can you find out the exact distance to the "1000" yard gongs and post a notice on the firing line and in the office and make sure the people in the office can answer the question "how far are the gongs ". It makes a huge difference in the bullet drop if they are 1018 or 1022 or 1000, last time I was there nobody could give me an answer. Also it looked like there were target holders not being used at a fixed line. Are these at 1000 yards ? and the gongs at some further distance like about 1015 yards? need clarification, thanks. |

Are there any plans for being able to shoot steel at pistol or shorter rifle ranges at the club? Quoted:

You've got a friend in me :) This is one of my biggest pet peeves with how the club was ran and why I got involved. Too many "This club is for 6mmBR bench rest guys and NOBODY ELSE" members. Fortunately, the tide has changed and I think everyone has accepted that in order to grow and remain solvent we need to cater to all types of shooters from youth .22LR to appleseed to 3 gun to 6mmBR guys. I am working on getting a steel target area setup but it will not be happen in a hurry (see my third sentence) There is a diagram floating around. I will try to find it. They range from 1008 to ~ 1017. The 1000yd gong match shooters will know if I can't find it, so I will ask them. Quoted:

I saw the diagram posted in the office and the lady behind the desk said she thought it was not accurate and the other guy behind the desk said he has been away for months and had no idea. All employees need to have accurate info and be able to relay that info to paying customers especially after they have driven 4 hours to get there. Just saying. There is a lot that goes into shooting our 1k matches (the reason those gongs exist) and the 1k yard gong folks move those things around constantly. As a matter of fact, just a week ago from this post they rearranged the 1k yard gongs. This is a total PITA and requires a lot of work, time, and materials. They don't do it for fun. They get blown to pieces (usually some bozo with a .50 who has no idea what he's doing) or degrade from exposure over time, or the berm has to be reworked and sifted, or... To expect our office manager to constantly know the distance to those targets is a bit unreasonable given how we do things. All of our steel targets are donated and hung by very hard working volunteers. If you really need to know how far away a gong is you can range it yourself with a LRF, ask an experienced BR guy that may be out there, or invent bulletproof, waterproof wood that doesn't ricochet placed on dirt that doesn't erode so our hard working volunteers can hang gongs and never have to do it ever again. That diagram I mentioned earlier still applies to some gongs, but not all. Even that diagram was made by a volunteer with his own LRF and his own time and his own paper and given to the club. We aren't for profit and some things reflect that. Just saying. |

you can do better, its not that hard. It appears there is a fixed target line with some really nice post holders in the ground. once that fixed distance is known the small 15 or 20 yard change to the gongs can be noted by the volunteers and then the info relayed to all personnel.
I will do it the next time I make the 4 hour drive from west palm beach. What is the distance to the target holders set in the ground? looks like they are set up for a paper match, so perhaps that is the 1000 yard mark I would assume but would like to get confirmation. |

you can do better, its not that hard. I'm simply here trying to provide information. You can be nice and I'll help out, or you can be "that customer" that every business wishes would go away. |

Thanks for posting about your experience.
We are making good progress. It's slow but that's intentional. It is best to do things right the first time. We brought back tannerite, we've got quality gongs installed at 600 and 1k, we're selling ammo at realistic prices (500 round bricks of 22LR for $16 (member pricing) and 9mm for $9.50, etc) were linked into the 21st Century as far as tech goes, the staff is receiving formal training, we've got a true 100 yard line berm and 25 yard pistol line, Area 51 is completely redone and we're almost complete with a master site plan that will quite literally transform the entire range. That's not bad for 4 1/2 months of work. Hard to believe we "have trouble operating over there". I'm certain the guys complaining will run for office and do it better next year. I'd love to have my weekends back. |

Yes theres always a wineass in the bunch cant make everyone happy Oh ok, didn't know that was who they were, that's not the name they rented under. Lou handled that and didn't tell me anything other than, "it's taken care of". From what I gathered, there shouldn't have been an issue as we went back there, they were very cooperative, changed the set up of the targets and everything was fine. I was not told they were banned, nor did I see a reason for them to be. But Dave, I have to ask, and this is just teasing you but were you a little irritated when you came in and paid regarding our fees and such?
