Well after 8 years away it looks like i'm moving back to FL.

Only thing is i'm moving to Jacksonville (i'm a gulf coaster by birth) and I have no knowledge of the area. Any thing I should know, what should I jump in on or avoid? Where are the good gun stores, ranges, etc? Gun and non gun related info very much appreciated.

Thanks

OTS in Orange Park.  I'd avoid the north and west sides.

stay out of the west side, and t he north side of Jax.  Southside, down to St. Augustine is good.  Area around SR 210/ I-95 is good.  New Bass Pro shop coming to that area soon.

I live North, it's not that bad, really you should CC everywhere in Jax, never know what can happen or where. Gun Gallery is a must, I'm there at least 3 times a month, and if you're into NV hog hunting I'm you're guy, and if you like inshore fishing Slugo is you're guy, he knows all the secret spots.

I live north also and agree that it's not that bad, but I also live at the end of a dead end road. Gun Gallery is the go to place in Jax. What brings you to town anyway? I'm just always curious about people moving to town. I've always lived within the same 5 mile radius.

San Marco to Miramar is the most convenient place to live if you are working downtown and also has the best public schools in Duval Co. Prices reflect that. If you don't mind driving into Jacksonville for work, there are a lot of nice spots in St Johns Co. Places to avoid would be NW Jax and Arlington. Good gun stores would be Gun Gallery and Wild West Guns and Gold. A good all around range is Gateway Gun Club. A good skeet/sporting clays place is Jacksonville Skeet & Trap Club.

JAX gun club also has a sweet sporting clays course also... Like everyone said above.. Take it all in and make your decision...

Thanks guys. What about if I wanted to buy some land out of town to use as a private range? Any advice what are the laws like for shooting down there? Depending on the county up here I can shoot off my back porch or one county over you aren't allowed to be within 500 yards of a residence.

All helpful as I've been at this for a long time.  I just bought on Amelia island.  My wife wanted s beach and I wanted golf, guns, fishing and motorcycling. I close in my house in just a couple more weeks.  I was down there yesterday and the day before taking care of some things and just loved the beaches just north of the ritz.

Slug-O is right PV, PVB, Nocatee is great.  If my kids were still school age I'd probably pushed harder that way.  Very nice schools in that area although Fernadina Beach schools seem pretty good too.

When I get down there I'm going to try and get some fishing lessons from a Slug-O. I wonder if he has any recent pictures?

I'd love to move up that way as I have friends up there but the SO is a school teacher and my job would make that one hell of a commute.

My plan right now is to buy a house in the suburbs and some land out somewhere else to shoot on...so hopefully someone can chime in and help out with that. Dropped you a pm btw

There is a slot size limit on them. Can only keep them between 18-27 inches. They are a hell of a lot of fun to tug on though!

I'll be working just down Butler a little ways from the mall so hopefully the commute won't be too bad. I've lived in Hampton Roads and the DC area before so i'm used to traffic, although i hear Jacksonville is pretty bad. I will miss rural central VA though! lol
