I usually don't do this but I was really annoyed today when I went to check out a new gun store. I went to Florida Armory in Miami because I sold a pistol on GunBroker and need to have it shipped to an FFL out of state. While I was there I thought I would pick up a detent spring and front takedown pin if they had it. The first thing I noticed was that they were selling their 6920s for $2500 and one of the sales people said straight up to a customer that they don't price their other rifles because they change them all the time at their whim. I thought that was outrageous and didn't want to buy anything but thought I'd ask about what I came for since I was there anyway. They said $60+shipping to transfer my pistol out! I told them that was crazy and they said yeah, well, opinions vary. I agreed and left.
Idk if their prices have always been this high, or if they are gouging because of the current climate, but it is unacceptable. Are there any other places in the area that I should use to send my pistol out that might also have spare AR parts? I'm new to the area so I dont really know who has what around here. |

Wow, $60? That's crazy. If you're close enough to Margate use Lee's Pawn...he's much cheaper. Or check Lou's.
When I sell, I always tell out of staters to pick an FFL that accepts from an individual or I can't complete the deal. It's simply too much hassle to go to a gun store and deal with the ship out versus going to USPS or UPS and doing it direct. |
|
What is unacceptable? This is the way the market works...
You didn't like their prices so you decided to look elsewhere. Market prices reflect what people are willing to pay and are the main reason some stores still have items in stock. I agree with you in that I would never pay what most stores are charging right now, but that is just a result of the market. If you don't like the prices, don't pay them. |
|
What's fucked up is the fact various FFL holders add their own requirements, such as having you use another FFL... nothing in the rules say they can't receive from a private person. Tell your buyer to find another FFL to receive the pistol.
I had my FFL at one time so I know transfers are easy... |

That's normal for them. Search the archives and you will see dosens of posts on their escapades including theft, lies, and gouging ... |
| So, can I just bring the gun to the post office in the box and tell them its a weapon going to a firearms dealer and they will know what to do? I would feel weird bringing a gun into a federal building. I know some UPS locations do ship guns, some don't. I have had mixed luck with it |

take it to FEDEX But also be prepared for the run around from them as well. I've taken it to a regular store, UPS and FedEx. The small stores told me to take it to a "hub" location. Even though their company policy stated that any store could do it. Just fair warning of potential BS. |
|
I always take it to a hub location, I will have to look it up but I think it is specifically stated in their policy that you must take it there.
ETA: There is no specification for FEDEX... but I still take it to the local hub. Here is a good website that lays out policy for multiple carriers: http://www.thegunzone.com/ship-guns.html |
| If none of the suggested FFLs will handle the transaction Gunbroker or one of the other on-line gun auction sites has a list of FFLs that are willing to ship and receive guns for on-line buyers. I found one my area one on there that was willing to do it for $10 plus call in fee. |
| I had a shop that tried quoting me 150-200 to do a class 3 transfer and I was going fill out the paperwork for him. And that price was without the stamp itself. Tried telling me that the 3 other shop I quoted that told me $50 must be out their mind cause "all the time and effort involved he would be loosing money " lol . So I went to a dealer that only cost me $10 in gas for $50 fee. |

I asked http://goingquiet.com/ how much to transfer a SDN762 in and the owner said "I bill $75 per hour and it could take me up to seven hours'. I laughed at the asian guy and said no thanks. He asked why I didn't want to buy local as he had them in stock, I explained that his were priced at full msrp + tax which makes it $250 more than silencershop. |

I can't believe that guy is still in business. He's a joke and anyone who deals with him is an idiot. Lotus wants $100 transfer fee on their retail priced cans. I almost laughed in the guy's face. I went down to Lee's the next day and bought my Sparrow with tax and transfer fee for way less than retail. That was my 5th NFA purchase from Lee and I'm not going to anyone else but him for NFA stuff. |
