I am wanting to get my CCW permit/license and I've been told that I can circumvent the mandatory training class if I have a DD214 showing an honorable discharge.

* Is this true and if so, what is the process?
* If I can simply apply with my DD214 documents, where can I get information regarding the specifics of CCW law in this state so I know what the requirements are?

Google "FL CCW Laws" and go to the site above.

Thanks for confirming that my military service will suffice for me to apply for my CCW instead of paying for a CCW class.  With this in mind, where is the best place to get information regarding Florida CCW laws???

Get the book by Jon H. Gutmacher, Esq.  It is pretty much considered the best reference for Florida Gun laws.  The title is "Florida Firearms Law, Use & Ownership".

If your in or around Brevard and prefer an actual class I do a class that covers the laws in depth.

Do you apply for your CCW at the local police or sheriff's office???

A.  Take a class anyway
B.  Read the booklet that is part of the application packet
C.  Both, then also read Gutmacher's book

All are correct but C is the best answer.

Take a class from this guy:
Randy Cain's Handgun 101

The class is located here:
Southern Exposure Training in Lakeland, FL

While it certainly never hurts to take any instruction one needs to be careful when it comes to who to listen to when it comes to the legal use of force and applicable laws in the State of Florida. Just because an individual has a certificate to instruct in the use of firearms does not mean they're qualified to instruct on the law or the use of force.
cormorantslayer above is one of the very few individuals I would recommend in this regard, J. Patrick Buckley  in Naples is another. If you're in the Tallahassee area I'd be happy to go over the carry statutes and use of force laws with you and answer any questions.

I have the utmost respect for Randy as an instructor, and have taken that class from him.

It is not a class on the laws of Florida.

I am prior military (many years ago) and am living in Polk County.  However, my knowledge of Florida CCW laws is based primarily on the internet thus far. If the booklet that comes with the application is comprehensive, it would be good to spend the CCW class fee on the license or permit itself.

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has regional offices. If you can apply at one of them, you will have your permit inside of 2 weeks. My permit says it was issued 6 days after I applied in office. Took 5 days to get down to Miami from Tallahasee, though.

i will be surprised if just prior .mil service gets it.  i have a current CCW from another state that reciprocates with FL and had to sit thru the class. luckily the instructor cut me a break on the cost. still a waste of a Saturday

the only reason I bothered was so that I could purchase a handgun without the wait.

I can confirm that a DD214, or active orders to a Florida installation, will suffice for the "training" requirement for a Florida CCW. My brother got his by showing his orders, and I have several buddies from high school that are veterans that have used their DD214 to get their CCW without any additional training.
