Hey folks. I'm a Floridian currently stationed in Oklahoma and am visiting some family in Miami next month.

My brother in law wants me to bring a couple of my firearms so I'm looking for a place to go shoot.

Here in Oklahoma I'm a member of a private club with an outdoor range which I prefer over indoor ranges.

I searched online and found that Miami-Dade Parks & Recreation has a public range called Trail Glades Sport Shooting Range. I'd like to get some info about it:
-crime in the area
-security on site
-good times to go to avoid crowds
-can you bring your own targets/stands
-good places to eat nearby
-any thing else I may not be considering

Also, I've shot at a public range at a WMA here in Oklahoma before and couldn't find if there was one near Miami. Any info on this would be great as well.

Thanks

Crime in the area is low considering TG is in the middle of nowhere. It is next to a casino though. It is a very safe place to shoot. Usually in the AM it seems to be more packed. Too many rules IMO. Only 1 shot every 5 seconds, you can't shoot silhouette targets, but you can stick up rounds splatter targets on their supplied stand. Just east of the range is a pretty bad ass BBQ place to eat at. If you want to have some fun I recommend Henry's in homestead. It's a small range on a guys property in the middle of nowhere. On the weekends there is usually a RO which makes it pretty safe. During the week I have encountered some people who were definitely not pros at gun safety. Hope this helps.

You will also need to take a 30 minute safety course to use the range at Trail Glades which is basic gun safety and the rules of the range. Are you going to be in Miami on the 14th?

Thanks for the replies. I don't know if I can stand the 1 shot every 5 seconds. Plus, I like to bring my own targets. Time to google-fu Henry's.

Clusterpup, as of now it looks like we'll be in Miami from the 12th through the 19.

We are doing an arfcom shoot on the 14th @ trail glades tactical range. you can rapid fire there, we will be the only ones on the range and you won't need to take the 30 minute class.

EDIT: It's been rescheduled for August. Trail Glades is going to be closed while you are here so check out henrys.

I go to the pembroke gun store's indoor range cause it's close to me and there are no 'rapid fire' restrictions.

I've heard the clientele there can get sketchy, but I've never ever seen it.

The most scared I've felt was next to a brinks-type class of guys with matching hammerless 686's and brand new fake-leather and an instructor who may as well have been barking at deaf people.  THOSE guys scared me.

I generally go middle of day or thereabouts as I work nearby and if I have a free second, I hop in.

If you're in the area, I can definitely meet you there...

I'm in Deerfield Beach. Usually go to National Gun Range on Atlantic just west of 95 at Andrews. $29.00 an hour, but a/c no caliber restrictions. You can even rent a Barrett 50 if you want. No crime to speak of. No full auto. For that you need to go to http://www.popsrange.com/ it's a private club in Pembroke pins. Open membership.

I may stop by there one day to check it out.

anything I should know?

Thanks. Hopefully they fix the pipes that hold the targets because the last 3 times I've been there my targets kept falling over.

They are going to work on them as well. The guys that work there will be fixing the holes by hand so not sure how far they will get. At least they have 3 weeks to do it.

Shouldn't be to hard to fix them. The pipes are pvc  and unless they cemented them in with a flared end down, they should come out fairly easily. I've pulled fence posts out of concrete down here. Worse they'd have to do is get a hole saw and cut them out. They were bad on the rifle area at all 4 distances.

Henry's is open every day unless they have it reserved. (305)248-3086 or cell (305)394-2151 Call ahead to make sure. Rough road getting there but cars can make it. If you go slow. Henry is normally there as RO. Skeeters are too.

Do you have to bring your own targets/stands to Henry's? I'd like to get my packing list ready since I'm coming from Oklahoma.

My normal stands are 1x2 frames with 2x4 bases. If I can/have to bring my own stands then I'll make some PVC stands that I can disassemble and put in a backpack.

They have frames there. I usually just bring stickies. Also, pretty much anything is game. I usually bring 12 packs of Sam's cola, watermelons, tannerite, old electronics, etc.

Just to follow up, we ended up making the trek out to Henry's. I'm glad we did, we meet some nice people and even got the chance to shoot a suppressed Beretta 92 and Walther 22LR.

Thanks everyone for your help.

It has been awhile since I mentioned how awful the staff is at Markham Park in Broward County. Rude and ignorant. I spent 20 minutes debating whether my Spike's SBR was full auto because of the color filled selector markings. Then the dorky younger guy eyeballed us so bad after that my 14 year old kid did not even want to shoot. It was Father's Day. Avoid that place. They employ assholes in my opinion.

Eh, I take the good with the bad there.  There are some RO's who are just plain  But some of them are solid class act types.  I was there last weekend sighting in and had one of them doing spotting duty for me.  He sat there for 45 minutes with me, calling shots, adjusting, etc and had a great attitude the entire time.  Talked with another one and discussed my handloads and why they weren't stabilizing in my gun.  Most of them are pretty helpful and will take the time to help you out.  I have seen them many times helping out new shooters if they ask for it.  Markham with the general public is great for sight in or T&E but that's about it.  However, the club shoots at nighttime there are more than  worth it.

Sorry you had a bad experience there.  What exactly happened that left you with a sour taste?

Also, I will be there tomorrow.  I won't be hard to miss(hear), I will be shooting a Larue 308 with a Brake  Come say hi if you recognize me, I will have two blondes with me too.  (sorry one of 'em is my future wife and she's all mine)
