What do Snow Birds do with their pool when they head north for the summer? Drain it or cover it? It would be a considerable liability in many places around the country if some kids start using your pool and get hurt when you are not there. My wife is getting the buy a bug out house where we want to retire idea. After vacationing on the west cost for the past 10 years we know FLA is the place. Appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

I work in and around a very large well-known golf/retirement community.  I don't recall seeing any drained pools.  All pools here are inside an enclosure such as a large screened in covered porch area.  I would suspect a local pool company handles the maintenance when the residents are out of town.

Not a good idea to drain since many places in FL are just feet above sea level.  Many just have a pool company that cleans and checks chemicals weekly.  I don't think kids breaking in and using the pools is a big issue down here since so many homes have pools it's just not a big deal...atleast I don't hear about it in my area.

This.  The summer provides little major issues chemically other than letting all the monsoons out to keep the level correct.  Weekly or bi-monthly shock/vacuum/test will run you a 50-150 depending on size/time/material/quality of the service.

Cant leave the pools drained in Fla. the water table rising can float the whole thing out of the ground and cause some serious damage. empty pools act like a big concrete boat when empty.  The water in it holds it down believe it or not. Most of the time the pool cleaning companies maintain the pools while the snowbirds are gone.

Considering the large number of dipshits in my area (Broward), IMO I would have heard about it if it was a problem. I think that as long as you've got an enclosure to protect yourself from an attractive nuisance claim, you should be okay.
