Someone on the Spikes website Forum put this class up, and I'm thinking about taking it.  It comes with the rifle, so it doesn't seem like too bad of a deal to me.  Anyone have any experience with these folks?

The price doesn't sound too bad, but you need to consider the end product.

Other than listing you will get a spike's lower (or equivalent ), it doesn't say the manufacturer of the other components.

Assuming you might get a Delton Kit with lower, that would cost ~550

Assume all the tools cost ~100

You are looking at $650 in materials to build one.

So the class would cost you $200

Whether that is worth it, is up to you.  I would definitely contact them and find out exactly what you would be getting parts wise for your money

I assumed it as going to be just lower end parts, because I'm sure they still want to turn a profit.  I did ask them, and got this response:

"The upper will come from LAR Manufactoring or LMT...the barrel comes from Wilson Arms, Del-Ton, or E.R. Shaw, and the rest of the components come from various government contractors that we use, depending on the availability"

Only problem I have with this is that it's a six-hour class.  I (or anyone who has built ARs) can teach anyone who is familiar with tools at all how to build an AR in ten or fifteen minutes.  I say that because I doubt a class like this will be doing taper cuts for FSBs or anything like that.

If you like the gun that much - take the class. I have been to the COLT class now 3 times. I have to go through it every 3-4 years for work, I'm going the the S&W class at the end of the month. It is mon-fri. I have also been to the Remington classes over the years. Anyway, the classes don't teach you anything about building a gun that you can't learn online and through a friend. I have found the factory classes very valueble for manuals/specs/years of experience of the instructors. I have to know when to replace parts and how to repair our guns at work. Much more involved than one needs to just assemble an AR or 9mm or shotgun or revolver or whatnot. I don't know how involved they get at this class - but it may be worth the money to you. I would ask questions regarding what steps you will be going through - exactly. The more involved (barrel/sights/gas block) the more value. If you have the cash/time and they show EVERY step involved - I say go for it.

Gainesville Target range offers a similar class. Cost is about the same and parts list is similar. It would probably be a good class for someone wanting to do a build that has little experience with ARs. Most people here could probably build better and cheaper on there own. The Build it Yourself forum here is free and has step by step tutorials on everything you need to know.
