The U.S. Border Patrol-involved chase and crash in Manatee County Tuesday has exposed a human trafficking ring. In addition to the one man captured shortly after the crash, officials report six other men were taken into custody Tuesday night near a subdivision off State Road 64. According to officials, a patrol agent said he spotted a suspicious van on the highway just before 11 a.m. and followed it until it crashed in a Publix parking lot near State Road 64. Once the van stopped, several men inside it took off running. Several law enforcement agencies, including the Manatee County SWAT team, worked together to track the men. Armed and dressed in protective gear, officers searched the nearby woods and neighborhoods. The U.S. Border Patrol's agent-in-charge Steve McDonald says human trafficking is a big, dangerous business on Interstate 75. "It's something to we take very seriously in light of recent events,'' he said. "It's getting very dangerous out there." |

"It's something to we take very seriously in light of recent events,'' he said. "It's getting very dangerous out there." The guys smuggling people/other things have been ramping up a bit recently. Seems like they are more willing to assault/shoot at the people chasing them in situations where they often didn't in the past. |
