South Florida Store Clerks Go Vigilante
All over South Florida, besieged employees are shooting back. A few blood-soaked examples: • On August 12, 2007, a 54-year-old Pembroke Pines Super Stop clerk pulled a handgun on a shotgun-wielding pair of robbers, killing one. • A month later, a clerk at OG's Corner Urban Wear in Oakland Park shot and whacked a 17-year-old robber. • Two months after that, the manager of a Naranja grocery store killed a 14-year-old ski-masked robber strapped with what turned out to be a BB gun. • In August last year, a Miami Gardens videogame store manager was murdered in a shootout after he nailed one of three armed robbers. "Vigilante"? Sigh . . . |

Typical leftist rag. Do the right thing your a vigilante, get killed or wounded in the act of robbing someone at gun point, your a victim. BS.
Maybe if more of these store owners do stand up there will be less attempts. At least the dead ones can't do it again. :) |

I wrote the editor and writer this :
A vigilante is defined as "One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement into one's own hands". The guys in the case you refer to were defending themselves and their property which is allowed by state and federal law.
What you wrote is a typical attempt at causing hysteria by a leftest writer who does not know the facts. I will no longer advertise with you online or in print till a correction is printed. This message has been forwarded to your editor ... Omi Ramirez President CWLMIAMI.COM I am no longer advertising with them and i have for over 3 years ... |

The reporter, Gus Garcia-Roberts, contacted me when he was researching the article, and I basically told him "no comment." While I appreciate the fact that he didn't mention my name, he doesn't seem to appreciate the difference between legal self-defense and vigilantism:
At a Biscayne Boulevard Burger King this past March, a customer with a permitted Glock ended the life of an armed robber in a firefight. The vigilante sustained hits from several bullets and is currently wrapping up physical therapy. A man with a gun tried to kill me, so I defended myself. I'm a crime victim, not a vigilante. Grrr. |
| As much as I hate the article, along with the Herald, at least the comments on the page stay in line with common sense. Basically screw the "journalist" and kudos to those taking matters into their own hands when necessary and putting these scumbags where they belong, 10 feet under! |

The article does not really suck, only the title.
Except for a few things like, "blood soaked examples"... But hey, that's artistic license. A nice touch: Abdel pulls out a surprising document — a missive of gratitude from Hammond's grandmother, handwritten on yellow lined paper and dated December 30, 2008, the day after the shooting. "I am sending you this letter because I want to apologize for the actions my grandson Joshua Hammond took toward you and your customers," wrote Shirley Riettie. "I am very grateful that you didn't take his life. I know it would have been justified."
