I'm in the market for a reliable 12 gauge legal limit barrel. Problem is I don't know exactly what to look for. Not for competition shooting, more like tactical shtf defense. I tried a 200.00 maverick but was displeased with the weight,,too light and didn't feel right with a pistol grip so I sold it just as fast as I bought it.. I'd rather not spend over 600 on it so I can continue my failed attempts at buying extra ammo for the rest of the family sitting in the safe. Any good recommendations. I'd rather ask you guys because the local shops just wanna sell what they have in stock.....I would rather go in and ask for what I want them to get for me.
Thanks in advance |
| If you are looking to use a pistol grip (especially an AR type grip adapter).. its Remington 870 end of story....the reason being is mossy's have the safety up top which is a PITA to flick with a pistol grip an 870 the safety is next to your trigger finger giving you much easier access without chnging your grip. Ive had both types, Loved both types, but with the grip you mentioned an 870 is the way you want to go IMO |

Remington 870... /End Thread +1 Everything you need, and a great shotgun! I have two and they work perfectly. ![]() I bet that maverick will never have a malfunction either. I have a 930, not this model, but same system. Thousands of rounds, never one malfunction. http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/New/85370.jpg +1 on the 930 great customer svc to. |

| I've got to chime in here and throw the same thing everyone else is saying. Mossberg 500 or 590 or a Remington 870. Both the 500 and 870 come in a bazillion configurations so you can get what's just right for you. Plus, there are so many aftermarket options for both systems that it will blow you away (not literally). Last point is your price range: both of them can be had for under $400 which will give you plenty of cash left over in your budget to outfit with flashlights, shell carriers, etc. and still have enough money to buy a few boxes of shells (if you can actually find them). |

I've had both a Moss 500 and an 870 Rem . Both good shotguns IMHO and never had any problems with either. Whatever you get keep in mind Bushido Tactical is having a Defensive Shotgun course in Aug. in Orlando . I'm trying to arrange my sched. to attend. I just may have to attend! Held a few remmy's today and I think thats the route I am gonna go. You guys have been fantastic with the replies and I appreciate it. |

Another vote for the 590A1. Mine is a key part of my homeline defense (and I've got a lot to choose from). It is as reliable as they come. With nine rounds in the tube, six in the sidesaddle and five on the stock ... well, 20 rounds of 12-ga. buckshot will settle most anything. Remmy 870s are excellent shotguns, but I've never found one that was more reliable than a Mossy. Remmys are smoother, but you just cannot kill a Mossberg. Lord knows I've tried, over many decades. Mine has ghost-ring sights –– bought it used on the boards for $200, but that was a steal you will not be able to match. Mine (ignore the SxS –– it's out of your price bracket, and it's a 20-ga. anyway). http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/1498longandshort.jpg Bear's Bark? |
