Jeb Bush Ponders Florida Senate Run
02 Dec 2008 07:15 pm Two sources close to Jeb Bush, including one who has spoken to the former Florida governor within the past few hours, say he is seriously considering a run for Senate now that incumbent Republican Mel Martinez has retired. "He is receiving a lot of encouragement from both in and out of the state," an longtime Bush adviser said tonight. "He is going to take his time and approach this very methodically." Bush will weigh, according to this adviser, how a run would impact his family, his business, and whether the Senate would be the best platform for the causes he'd advocate –– education, immigration, GOP solutions to health care and energy. Bush did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment. If he decides to run, Republicans expect the field to clear for him. Maybe. Gov. Charlie Crist, with whom Bush has not had the warmest of relations, is said to be interested in moving to the Senate. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is weighing a bid, as is former state House Speaker Marco Rubio, Orange County executive Richard Crotty, and U.S. Rep. Connie Mack. Bush, in an interview with Newsmax this week, said that the GOP risked becoming "the old white-guy party" and that it ought to modulate the way it handles the immigration issue. Bush, who speaks fluent Spanish and won the support of a majority of Hispanic voters during his 2002 re-election bid, favors a comprehensive approach to reform. But Bush said that Republicans can't give up on conservatism, and, in what might be interpreted as a dig at Florida's current governor, said that Republicans "can't be Democrat-lite. We can't just 'get along." The words echo some Republican criticism of Crist, who they view as accodomationist in his politics and unwilling to push for real reforms. Alex Sink, Florida's chief financial officer, has said she'll run for re-election in 2010 but might change her mind in the wake of Martinez's announcement. I received a form letter from Mel's office regarding his shamnesty position. He can eat a dick. |

I'd have to say that Jeb is leaps and bounds better than Charlie. I say that for the simple fact that Jeb basically did whatever he thought was best for the state. Remember post-9/11––what did he cut from the budget big time? Education. People screamed at him and he responded with the obvious: education generates next to no revenue for the state; tourism and citrus do. If we could increase revenue by helping them, then education could go back up later. If we cut other things at the expense of education, all would suffer. And he was right.
I loved his press conferences. You always knew where he stood and he was funny. Too bad he didn't get elected governor earlier. We could have had a President Jeb Bush instead. |
| won't miss Mel a bit. wrote him about off shore drilling and got a form letter saying the oil companies already have millions of acres of leases in the gulf they aren't using. (there isnt any oil on those leases you dufus). Emailed him again about the Berg vs. Obama case. Got a form letter saying its not the Governments Job to be sure a Candidate is allowed to run for office per his citizenship. Basically..you voted for him, he is in.... ( then who's job is it? |

I wrote to him also on the subject of off shore drilling and got a response about hurting the tourist industry. Then I sent another reply back pointing out where he was wrong about his stance.

Jeb would be cool. Charlie Christ would be better. There are even a couple of conservative democrats who aren't too bad. I fear this election a lot less without Mel on the ticket. Crist is a tool. After we get rid of Martinez Crist is next. What he said, Crist is in love with Polar Bears |

If it's true, and it's a BIG if, what's the big deal? Jeb is the man and Crist needs to be in San Francisco if you get my drift.
You know he's getting married, right? And has been married before. http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/state/article659439.ece |
| Jeb was involved in the comuter train fiasco going on here in central Fl. This will put big $$$$ into CSX coffers and cause a huge increase of trains through Lakeland. It will be a mess. This deal transfers liability from CSX to the state for any damage CSX causes on the tracks. I lost my respect for him because of this deal. |

I watched an interview of Crist, asking him what the new direction of the Republican party needed to be.
He said we needed 'a bigger tent'. We needed to attract more African Americans and Hispanics. He said that was the biggest problem with the Republican party. I heard him say that with my own ears. |

Mel Martinez is a disgrace. I say that as an American first, a Cuban exile second.
I grew up in Orlando in the 70's & '80's, and we all knew he was a smooth talking ambulance chaser. He sued the First Baptist Church over a slip & fall scam; that church was tremendously helpfull to many early Cuban exiles, and was near & dear to all of us. What an ingrate!. When Bush43 picked him to be HUD Scretary I knew the SHTF. When he ran for Senator I supported Bill McCollum, a 20 year congressman, a staunch anti-communist, an A+ NRA second amendment supporter, and a wonderfull human being. But no, the idiots down here wanted one of their own, and elected ol' Mel, a namby-pamby bowl of Jello who stands for nothing. Jeb would be an improvement, but my preference would be Bill McCollum, who is now the Florida Attorney General. Jorge |
