Gadsden county is the cheapest real estate you're going to  find around Tallahassee. Other wise their are two houses in my neighborhood {north side} for sale in the $160,000 range.

Unfortunately realestate prices have continued to soar within the past few years.  Had I not relocated back to Florida in 2003, there is no way that I could afford what I have now.

For "affordable" land, you will need to go well away from Tallahassee.  I grew up there and for "personal reasons", would not live in that town if you gave me a house for free.  The town has gone to shit since 1968.....  My brother just sold his place off North Maredian and has since moved onto the land we co-own in Jefferson County.

My brother said that his taxes were up to $2500 per year, that's about what mine are here in Central Florida.

I have lived in Gadsden County, Tallahassee, and now in Wakulla. My commute to work is about 25 miles, but it's worth it. Taxes are a bit lower, the community much nicer, and my place cost a hell of a lot less than it would in Tallahassee. Just 10 miles further north would add about $50K to the cost of my home.

Edit: Liberty County is a bit farther away, and cheaper as well. Depending on what side of town you work on, Jefferson County can be reasonably close too. The houses in my area are starting right about $115K to $120K right now. There's a couple on the next street over that are available.  In general, there area is booming, though the slowing down of the housing market is showing.

Thanks for the replies;work will be on the northeast side of town.I can commute a distance for two years. My other alternative is to rent and keep the home here in Jax but our costs have skyrocketed here just in the last 5 years.Actually once we got a pro football team the town went to hell.

East side of the county is exploding, and prices are doing the same. You can find a place over on SGBs side, near the northwest. Less than 8 mile drive, about 20-30 minutes. Jump on interstate, and BOOM, you're there.

DAMN!!!!!  My brothers house was at/near the $180K mark with an actual whole acre in town and he was paying @$2500/yr.

I guess I should feel happy now...

You can move out towards Havana, but the area I'm talking about is closer in, almost into town. If you're looking at a map of the county, it would be the area on US 27 north of town.
