I will be moving to miami this august for law school.  I see another thread similar to this one but what I need to know some different information.

What are good areas to live and how expensive does living cost?  I will be going to St. Thomas University.

What is the weather generally like?

Is a car necessary? I would prefer not to drive across country if i didn't have to.
I will be coming from Las Vegas, NV.

Im sure i will have more questions later but these are all i can think of now. Any other bits of info or advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Cost of living is very expensive, unless you compare it to LA or NYC. 1/1 condos in my area go for $1200 or so.

St. Thomas itself is not in the nicest area, but in greater Miami, some of the nicest areas are surrounded by some of the crapiest, so you could probably find a nice place in Aventura or North Miami Beach, which are pretty close to St. Thomas. (Greater Miami pretty much refers to most of the county, as most municipalities blend into each other)

Weather is generally warm-hot. Shorts/t- shirts can be worn pretty much year round. You will find tons of people at the beach on Christmas day. Pretty much like L.V., but with a breeze to cool things off.

Car is essential. Public transportation sucks, and everything is pretty spread out, so I can pretty much guarantee you will wish you had a car.

Depending on what you drive now, you may just want to sell it and buy a beater down here. Daily drivers are pretty cheap down here, as everyone wants to drive a BMW.

Welcome aboard.

Car is a must, as Miami is definitely a commuter city.  Weather is hot/humid/nasty most of the year, but we have some great winters.  Coming from L.V., the humdity will smother you like a wet blanket.  Hurricanes make life interesting.  Rent will be expensive anywhere that's not ghetto.

Thanks for the input. I will probably be officially moved there come the beginning of August.  When does the hurricane season usually start?  I've never been through a hurricane, what can I expect?

Lots if wind, noise, and no power. Welcome to Miami. Come on down the water and the women are beautiful.

One thing I'll tell you that makes traveling in Miami easier. Look at a map of the city. It's a sector city, as it's NW/SW/NE/SE is divided by two main streets. Learn which way the numbers go up and down, and after awhile you can get anywhere in Miami-Dade county(with the exception of Hialeah) with an adress, Hemi-Cuda's fat ass has yet to learn that.

You're arriving at about the time the hurricanes tend to hit.  Aug - Oct. are months when they seem to draw a bead on SF.
