Hey guys, I'm moving for work from Detroit MI to Miami. I was wondering how to check out local laws regarding my firearms and CPL stuff. I currently have a Bushy Carbon 15 flat top rifle, custom colt 1911, and my cpl class certificate. I guess the questions I have are there restrictions on these firearms, and what to do about my cpl stuff. I passed the class, but haven't had time to get the license. Would it be better to get it issued here b4 the move and try to transfer it, or should I just start over in FL? Where is the best place to learn about local laws (i.e. barrel lengh, SBR, etc etc) Thanks for the help |

Bring it, you're moving to the Gunshine state. WTH is a CPL? If you want a concealed carry permit, all you need is a copy of some kind of firearms training, NRA course, hunter education, DD-214 and you are good. I think you have to be a resident for 90 days before applying, check the CWP tacked thread above. Machineguns, silencers, SBR's, SBS's AOW's, hicap mags, ammo by the freight container, all legal here. Check packing.org for a Florida synopsis. |

IIRC Miami doesn't put have any restrictions beyond what the Feds require, and they don't require you to register your guns with the city. FL let's you have all NFA items so long as they are legally registered with the ATF. I don't know if the Miami powers-that-be will sign off on applications though, so you'll have to go the trust/corp route like most of us here have. A FL carry permit is easy to get...check Packing.org to see if your state has reciprocity with FL, that way you can carry while waiting for your FL permit to come in. FL is a great place to be a gun-owner. Welcome! |

CPL = concealed pistol license. What we call it when you CCW here, actually our laws call the permits CPL and the charge for not having one CCW *shrug* Actually, I am looking for something close to Miami. I am taking a pay cut to about $70k so I'm not sure where to look for a place close within the budget. Also, I have the wife/kids thing so it would have to be a big ass condo or house. Any help would be nice. Thanks guy, looking forward to missing this winter :) |
Ouch Taking a pay cut and looking for affordable housing in the Miami-Broward areas isn't going to be easy. Housing prices have skyrocketed over the past few years. You might be able to pick up some bargains though. The market is flat right now. There has been a house next to mine that has been up for sale for the last year. What price range are you looking for in a home? Where in Miami will you be working? Traffic is horrendous here so if you have the opportunity, I'd look for something located close to where you work. School districts and schools are also important considerations and may be more of a factor in locating your home than the commute.

Right now, I have ~$200K house here. I would like to save some $$ but I doubt that would happen. Also, I managed to wreck my credit, so I may have to rent for a while. Schools are important, my kids are 2yr and 4yr. I would rather not private school if I can avoid it. I am working in downtown Miami, right by the Miami Arena. I want to stay close, but a better area is very important too. I don't mind working by the homeless shelter but I don't want to live there ;) I've spent a couple weeks in the area already this year, but I haven't had the chance to look around to see what's close by and nice to live at. Advice is very welcomed :) Thanks guys, |

Here's a link to a sampling of what under $500K will get you in zip 33138, which encompasses a sizeable area just north of downtown. I live in 33138, and it's a very easy commute to downtown regardless of traffic. http://www.realtor.com/FindHome/HomeListings.asp?frm=byzip&lid=Enter+MLS+ID&pgnum=1&ss_aywr=&optInCheckbox= &st=&mls=xmls&lnksrc=&mnbed=3&js=on&mnsqft=0&fid=so&vtsort=& poe=realtor&mnprice=0&ct=&zp=33138&mxprice=500000&typ=1&typ=2 &exft=0&exft=0&exft=0&exft=0&mnbath=2 |

I'd choose a different state if I were you. I don't think you'll find anything worth living in for under $300,000. And then, figure you'll pay about $6,000/year in taxes. Then you need insurance if you can get it. Add a good school on top of that, and I think you are going to have a really hard time fulfilling all those requirements. Good luck with your move. |

If you could afford plametto bay, you'd have the schools and a good hood covered. Miami Palmetto Sr when I was there got 26th of the nations top 1000. And the commute to down town isn't that bad, takin' old cutler road is a dream eta: but then you'd have jerks like me and MiamiARFan living close to you |
For a 300K house you can expect to pay at least 8k a year for the insurance. Its going to cost you 1200 a month just for taxes and insurance. The only differance between us and Califorina is that we are Gun Friendly. |
Doesn't the insurance have alot of variables? My house is in the mid low to mid 300's and I only pay 3800/yr, but then again, I don't need flood insurance. |

East of I-95 insurance really gets out of hand. In the 200k to 300k range you shoud think townhouse. Probably not new construction, but only a few years old. Normal insurance companies don't write new policies here. You have to go with the state insurance. My neighbor has it, just got an increase to $9900. Thank God I was grandfathered in under State Farm and only pay $4k. Oh yeah,,,we stated looking at private schools for the rugrat,,,around 10k/yr. Property taxes on a townhouse would be about 6k, insurance a little less than a house, probably in the 2-3 range. I, personally would budget for 1k a month for taxes and insurance. Central and North Florida are like another state, COMPLETELY different....God, I can't wait to move.... |
I should have stated that this is the insured value of the house. In other words if you have a 300K mortgage then this the amount you would pay. Yes it does have a lot of variables, in this case its a customer that lives 8 miles from the beach, no flood zone and has filed no claims. $500 of this bill is for state wind insurance fund. This is about as pure of a customer that you could find. A lot of the major insurance companies have had large rate increases in past 10 months. Many customers are now seeing a bill that reflects those increases. A 60/70 percent increase on top of another 60/70 percent increase is the cause of this problem. If we had another bad year like last year and this occurred again, then your insurance bill with 2 similar rate inreases for the customer above would skyrocket to the area of 20K. If this kept going this way we would be just like the people in Calif. that can't afford the earthquake insurance. Edit to correct some typos |
| You know the whole realestate thing is funny, I can see my house bieng worth what it is, but you acually get something for what you pay. My cousin just bought a house off US1 and sw80th street....good god, what he payed and what he got, made me wonder if the realestate companies have bought stock in anal- ease(tm) |
I agree that the realtors are mostly to blame for driving the prices of homes up. And while of course it benefits the seller, it also means the realtor gets a fatter commission. When we sold our condo, the buyer's realtor didn't do a damn thing but show up and walk around and look...didn't ask a single question or help with the transaction at all except bug the shit out of everyone to rush the closing so he could get his half of the commission. |

I moved to Miami from Warren in Oct 2003. Basically no restrictions on firearms (beyond Fed requirements as someone already mentioned) See the tacked threads for the handgun license (the class you took should be fine) Driving in Miami is considerably different than driving in Metro Detroit. Be prepared for passive, absent-minded, passengers behind the steering wheel. eta: That's all I will say since I get like this An example of driving 'between cities': Driving from Miami to Ft Lauderdale is work. Even though you may get on I-95, it is nothing like driving along on I-696 from Royal Oak to Novi. It takes about 25% longer *EVEN THOUGH THE DISTANCE IS ~THE SAME eta: Except during rush hour, then the time is TWICE AS LONG!!! It would be nice if I was exagerrating ![]() Get used to ONE season (took my body a year) Put away your winter clothes. If you ever travel north to see family, just pack pack your bag and leave it under the bed until you get ready to go to the ariport, lol. Tinted windows DO help. I haven't looked at buying property yet. Get GOOD sunglasses! There is still no Thai place like the one on 15Mile, just east of Dequindre Enjoy the sunshine |
