I just had my annual Selective Service Board Member training this past Saturday and we were asked if we might know of anyone who would be interested in serving on the boards in Dade or Broward counties. It seems that there is a shortage of volunteers to fully staff the boards in those two counties.

The requirements for a volunteer Board Member are that you be at least 21 years of age, not a current member of the armed forces (active or reserve), not retired military. Former military service, however is welcomed.

The training consists of one weekend for initial Board Member training, and about one 4-5 hour yearly training session.

Obviously, we do not have an active draft today, but the government still maintains the system in an inactive role should future developments require a return to a draft. In such a case as a local Board Member you would be required to hear cases where potential draftees file for exemptions to military service, and make judgements as to the merits of their claims.

The position is an uncompensated, volunteer position and more importantly, a way to serve your country without an enormous disruption to your daily lives.

If anyone is interested, please IM me and I'll provide you with more details.
