M577 mechanical altitude timing fuse, they are used on 4.2 inch, 105mm, 155mm, and 8 inch projectiles carrying payloads that are expelled during projectile airburst. The fuse itself is a mechanical clockwork timing device and can be set with a M35 fuse setter or a flat head screwdriver. The setting key is at the nose of the time to be set is viewed on 3 dials through a window on the side of the fuse or ogive. The fuse can be set to function from anytime between 2 to 200 seconds. The dial closest to the nose indicates hundreds of seconds or a triangle for no time setting. The second dial indicates tenths of seconds and the third dial indicates seconds in tenths of seconds. All settings are made by a reference to a hairline visable thru the window. Something kinda unique about these timing devices is they were built by Bulova Watch Co. and have reknown Swiss accuracy. The US Goverment has been buying them for serveral years now, they pay dearly for them, several hundred dollars a piece and are still used by certain Combat units over in Iraq. The fuse can be unscrewed by hand and dissassembeled into three pieces, beyond that it requires small hand tools used by a watchmaker. Each fuse comes with a technical data sheet explaining in detail the description, functioning, tabulated data, temperature limits and shipping and storage data. They make a nice paperweight for your desk and are a excellent conversation piece. I bought several thousand of them in a surplus sale a few years ago and now have just a few left, 9 as a matter of fact shown in the photo. $ 19.30 each delivered to the lower 48 states.
