I purchased my SD w/brace today from Atlantic and being new to HK and mp5s I need some help. I'm trying to decide between buying a can and calling it a day or have it converted to a ported barrel. Besides making it a "true" SD, the only benefit is that you can turn 115g into subsonic? HiTech Arms is showing $2,400 for an SD conversion and unless I'm in the wrong spot would make the decision for me. As for the can only route, I'm leaning toward the Omega 9k. That's only because it's one of the most frequently mentioned that works with it. What other good can options are there? Also, sounds like getting a better claw mount is recommended? UTG PRO seems to be the top choice? Anything else I need to spend my money on? |

Mine is on its way to Bahnhof Machine to have the barrel swap done. They came highly recommended by a local SOT, and I had a great discussion with the owner Brad. He says they are seeing a lot of these in for barrel swaps. I picked up a second one with the Magpul brace. I may leave that one setup as a braced pistol for use with regular cans. |

Agree - most HK smiths I researched are charging $500 or less for a barrel swap (with customer supplied barrel, gasket, and locking piece which are $200 to $230 total). As I wait on mine to arrive I keep waffling between trying the conversion myself, and just paying someone (as it's not much). In simple terms, order parts, press out barrel pin, press out barrel (jig it up to not crush reciever), change locking piece, press in barrel, set bolt gap, drill barrel, pin barrel. (Ya not simple but not insane, RPD I built was more involved) Am I missing something in there? I imagine it's why HK smiths with the tools are not charging much. |

Ordered one. Still debating back and forth on sending it off for a conversion or keeping the K barrel and just using a good modern can and subsonic ammo. My AP5 and AP5-P are both really damn satisfying to shoot with a Vent 2 and 147gr. |

My gun just arrived at the smith for the barrel swap. I think USPS is back to using a pony given how long it took. In the meantime I found this video and built one of these tools for cleaning the barrel. Parts were $10 at Home Depot (I already had the cement).  Failed To Load Title |

Figured I would update on mine. Finish looks good, sd cage was lined up right, bolt gap was good. Shot it both with the fake can and with my ptr vent 2. Ran great, no issues so i sent off the form 1 stuff already. It sounds great with the vent 2 and i have a lot of 147s so im going to just run it as is for now. May eventually make it a “true” sd but easier cleaning, using a can I already have…this will do for now. Only gripe is the safety is super stiff (getting a little better as I break it in), and the line on the safety doesnt line up with the marking on the trigger housing, but for the price I’d be nuts to expect perfection. I’m happy with it.

He sent me a video of the test fire. On the stiff safety - I took my trigger pack out and carefully polished (using hand file and polishing wheel in Dremil) the nub that interfaces with the safety selector. Also lubed it well. It reduced the stiffness significantly while still keeping engagement positive. |
