Currently thinking about getting a light on my MP5 clone SBR. The Surefire 628LM's are nice but over $300 seems a bit much.  I was thinking about a couple options and wondered what you guys were using

Option 1

Getting one of the classic Surefire 628's and replacing the bulb with a Malkoff M61

Option 2

A Surefire railed handguard and an Inforce WML

I'm trying to keep the weapon as light as possible and i dont want a vertical grip.

Just looking for some ideas (and pics)

Thanks

WMLs are very light, but not all that bright.  Good for close range.  I have one and like it, but the multi-output function is a little annoying.

I have a classic Surefire forearm and put in a Malkoff M61.  Thing is BRIGHT.

These are a steal when Robert has them in stock!

http://www.robertrtg.com/sf-mp5-hg.html

You can also find them on Gunbroker for around $100.

HK doesn't make the forend lights for the MP5. They are made by Surefire, and the ones on Robert's site are probably take-offs from police guns or parts kits. I've ordered plenty of stuff from him over the years. He is good to go.

I would get the surefire light forend if you don't want to use a foregrip and won't shoot with a suppressor. With a can, you're going to need an offset adapter for the lamp that costs a decent amount of money for what it is and has gotten difficult to find.

I have both the Surefire forend and a Surefire rail with a VFG and Pentagon light/laser combo. One's for shooting unsuppressed, the other for the Octane. I'd recommend the somewhat newer forends that have both momentary and constant on/off switches. I try to have constant on options with all of my flashlight-equipped weapons.

I really like mine. I'am thinking of going back to a wide grip though. I picked mine up from HKparts for $95 and it was like NIB even though it was listed as used police trade in.

Find a classic SF forened and jsut swapout the bulb. Best bang for the buck.
As other's mentioned, if you got a can you're gonna have an issue.

One idea I liked is AR15 member TDUnn's MP5 with Surefire forearm, Surefire M600 and HSP Thorntail mount. Run a 7" remote with built-in picatinny switch to the other side of the forearm and you're set. Can always move the light to another railed platform, instead of having a dedicated forearm. Costs more than the Surefire lighted MP5 forearm, but can be adapted to a ton of other uses.

That's what I'm planning to do, except with a (gulp) Troy tube forearm and optic rail.

ya, Troy.

Thanks GB.  One of my favorite parts of that build is that it keeps the light in tight without obstructing the can.  Also, I love the LDI C1 IR laser in the cocking tube.  Way too much fun under goggle.

I have a 628 and ended up taking it off in favor of a 1.5" piece of picatinny I put on the right upfront of a standard wide forearm. I have several extra pistol lights and keep one next to the MP5 in case I need it but since I haven't shot under low light with that gun in a few years I go with the simpler is better approach most of the time. That said, if the ladies are around the 628 goes on along with the 3 lug hider or a can... Just for the CDI factor.

What can do you run with the 628? I have been running a YHM Wraith with 3 lug and it won't fit on there with the 628. Had to swap back to the standard fore end.

I had run it with a Trinity and offset bezel but I never liked the way the offset adaptor looked so it now sits in a box most of the time along with the SF.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I ended up getting a used MP5 dedicated Surefire handguard from HKParts.net. I also picked up a Malkoff M61 drop in bulb from Brightflashlights.com

I'm pretty happy with the setup and will get to test it in the yard later this evening.

Oh....

Well, the Malkoff M61 is very bright and was exactly the upgrade I was looking for.  The Surefire handguard fits as well as the original and the pressure pad is very sensative.  The slightest pressure on the pad will activate the light.  I'm a little concerned about that since the pad covers such a large area on the right side of the handguard.  It is very easy to accidentally activate the light.

I am quite pleased with the setup.  It seemed to be the best way to go in trying to keep the weapon lightweight and use a light without a vertical grip

Just a tip, but it's a good idea to wipe the bezel off after each range trip. I let mine go for a couple thousand rounds and it was a royal mo-fo to get the built up carbon off of there. Oh, and before you shoot, put a little chapstick on the lens; the carbon haze will wipe right off.

Also, here's the correct rear sight as well as your missing windage screw.... http://www.robertrtg.com/pofmp5rearsight.html

They used to have a lkittle plastic cover that would go overpart of the pressure pad to prevent inadvertent contact. NO idea if surefires till has it.

Info on flashlight (surefire m600?) and the offset railmount?

Also, what ring is that on your aimpoint?

Thanks.

Flashlight is Surefire M600 with the KM2 vampire head (IR and white light)
The light mount is Haley Strategic Thorntail.  http://www.haleystrategic.com/store/thorntail.php
The ring is Aimpoint 12243 wide/low ring.  http://www.primaryarms.com/Aimpoint-SRPL-p/12243.htm

Enjoy!

Thanks, I've been googling like crazy trying to figure out the last two...

You are able to co-witness with the B&T rail and Aimpoint ring combo, right?

Yes, exactly.  The B&T rail and Aimpoint low wide rings allow for co-witness of the sights perfectly.

Best source for the rings is Primary Arms.  I found the B&T rails at Wolverine Supply in Canada.  They ship directly to you.

Other than the Aimpoint HKLRM mount (which is just a B&T 21241) which can be had at Midway, if you need B&T stuff, Wolverine Supplies is THE place to go.

Ok, I've thought about a good light too, esp for CQB, but that surefire looks like it's in the way of an attachment of ANY kind on the three lug. I usually have a FH, a comp, or a CAN on my lugs. Will an SWR Trident clear that thing?  Not so sure......

Would love to see pics if they do.
