I bought a PTR 91 GI about a week ago, took her to the range last Friday and ran about 40 rounds through her without a hickup... fast forward to today, back on the range to shoot some PRVI .308 I picked up.
About 3 mags in I had the first malfunction, round stuck in the chamber, cleared it, loaded back up and shot some more, had rounds stuck in chamber or partially extracted until it finally just stopped cycling.... I did notice after the fact, that the ejection pattern started at 30ish foot, at 1-2 o'clock, and came closer and closer until she started choking completely... I did also notice that the spent brass became less and less deformed (neck part of brass still got deformed as usual) I am assuming that the fluting was getting clogged up... but 100 rnds shouldnt be enough to have that to happen, should it..?? ETA: Good news: cleaned the gun up good yesterday, headed back to the range today with a mix of pmc, georgia arms and PRVI ammo... Rifle ejecting strong again (like next county strong) I only fired 10 rounds of the prvi stuff, but I'm pretty sure this ammo is the culprit, after all, the rifle was working like a champ again, and the only thing I did was cleaning her up... Bad news: I have around 850 rounds of this prvi ammo that my rifle hate.. and my only other .308 is a bolt action...
If I only had some rifle dropping friends that offered to buy some from me....
Thanks for all the responses guys, I'm gonna keep testing out this ammo some more, but I'm pretty sure it is the problem.. |
| im still new but my abbreviated opinion is that it seems extractor or spring related on one hand but then it stops cycling? did all this start with the new ammo? i had a similar but worse issue during my build where the bcg would bind after a few rounds and finally get bound on the ejector lever. at the last failure does it still strip and chamber a round or does it start rearward travel and stick with a partially extracted fired round? |

All the ammo used today was the same brand, all the ammo used on first range day was a different brand.
It started out good, first 40 or so rnds was fine, I didnt pay attention to ejection pattern, but looking at where I found the brass, it looks like the ejection was slowly getting weaker (brass being launched shorter and shorter) the 3rd mag was when it started messing up. Had a couple of FTE, the spent brass was still sitting on the boltface when the bolt tried to pick up a new round from the mag. Kind of sounds like an ejector problem, BUT it got progressively worse, to the point where I had total failure of cycling, leaving the empty brass in the chamber and I had to cycle it manually... (I had to put some a*@ into it when I worked the charging handle, it was way harder to open than with normal operation) Could it be that a gradually slower bolt speed would induce failures to eject, and finally failure of cycling..?? The fact that the brass towards the end of the shooting session had very little "flute marks" on them makes me think the flutes where getting "gunked" up to the point where the round got stuck in the chamber... My buddy was there with his FAL, I tried the ammo through his gun and it functioned fine.... |

Check bolt gap. One way to feel it is with the carrier closed, try to cam the charging handle open, it should open with a little bit of force but if it's unusually hard, your trunnion may be wearing. What should the bolt gap be..?? Do you just send the bolt home and measure the opening between the bolt and carrier? The charging handle does have some resistance in it, but I dont really have anything to compare it with... ETA: found a step by step walkthrough over on HKPRO.com looks like my bolt gap is .014 so pretty much right in the middle of the acceptable range.... |
| I have a personal interest in this thread since I believe we both purchased our guns from CDNN a couple weeks ago (likely produced by PTR at the same time as well). I haven't been able to get my the rifle range but I will as soon as I can and run at least 100 rounds down range. Have you contacted PTR about the problem? They may possibly be seeing a pattern (or not) but I am confident they will make sure you have a functioning rifle before all is said and done. |

Hope you figure it out bud and sorry about dropping your gun on the ground today. Is the PTR the one that got dropped? If so pull out your bolt and carrier and look for any excessive wear marks where the receiver or cocking tube may have been bent and causing it to bind. If not, I would also check to see if the carrier has free movement in the stripped receiver. |

I pay the extra to get NIW from HK parts. I will run other non HK stuff but will NOT run non HK extractors/springs The only other thing I have seen that caused weird problems was the roller plate break in half, part was in there the other jammed up on of the rollers and did weird shit. |

I had to put the stock on my hip and yank back on the cocking handle. It let go and I dropped his brand new gun on gravel. It started jamming before I dropped it. The bolt moves freely in the receiver. |

I had this happen to me once, I was shooting some stuff that used tar as a bullet sealant. The tar was getting blown back into the flutes where it collected, and eventually it stopped cycling until I cleaned it out thoroughly with brake cleaner and a 20ga brush. Now I only shoot that stuff in my FAL.
