Do HK SL8-6's actually say SL8-1 on the gun?

I saw one that fit the description of an SL8-6 ( black, short top rail) but it says SL8-1 on the gun.

Go over to HKpro and search for that. I think i remember someone saying there was some overlap where the last SL8-1s were upgraded to what would eventually get its own designation; the SL8-6. Double check me on that though.

The current black SL8's are not stamped SL8-1, they are just stamped SL8 on the receiver and will show a dash 6 in the ser number. There were some of the older black models that have the SL8-1 on the receiver but they were the first series of black ones imported. You can tell the older black models by the receiver markings of course but also by the white letters "Heckler & Koch" below the red "HK logo on the butt stock. All current black ones just have the red "HK" only logo on the badge with no white Heckler & Koch.
